For the past four months, I have been treating very sick patients diagnosed with COVID-19, struggling to breathe, some needing to be placed in medically induced comas and placed on life-support machines, and others not even surviving despite that last ditch intervention. I have been on the front lines as a hospital physician, using the latest strategies that scientists and doctors from around the world have discovered to combat this new virus. My colleagues and I risk our lives every day to help our patients and the community.
Imagine my surprise when I saw a now viral video spreading from a group of white-coat wearing individuals calling themselves “America’s Frontline Physicians,” questioning my and my colleague’s expertise, science, integrity and even our compassion in combating this pandemic. It is both a national embarrassment and also quite dangerous that misinformation such as this has been promulgated so widely throughout the country.
For those of you who have not seen the video, consider yourselves fortunate. But to summarize, the group claims that doctors around the country are withholding a cure for COVID-19. They cite hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin and zinc as cures, but these have been debunked as ineff�ective, hazardous or unproven.
They further claim that there is no need for masks, and that schools can open right away without any eff�ect on viral spread. In addition, they continue promoting the false claim that this virus is less deadly than the fl�u, and that tracking its spread and numbers is unimportant.
The majority of Americans are in line with the scientifi�c community that masks work, and they trust in the recommendations of physician experts such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Then why is this video, and other conspiracy theory laden media like it, so dangerous?
The danger lies in the doubt it spreads. Mistrust and skepticism will become louder against the medical and scientifi�c community, which can and has led to spread of the coronavirus. The video has become widespread despite efforts by Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to contain it. On one platform, the video had over 14 million views


in a day.
I started seeing this misleading video being posted by friends on my social media, who used it as a justifi�cation to defy social distancing and mask guidelines. As America’s death toll continues to rise, it only takes a few asymptomatic spreaders to undo our continued eff�orts to fi�ght the pandemic.
This is truly fake news, and most of us know it. Unfortunately, we are often drowned out by the cacophony of the conspiracy theorists. We need to be loud and clear that we believe in and support our public health experts and mainstream medical community.
This is why I am writing so strongly denouncing this video from the so-called America’s Frontline Doctors. We need to be persistent and consistent in our messaging every time such harmful misinformation comes out, and hopefully we will win over the skeptics. Wear masks. Socially distance. United, we will get through this pandemic together. Take it from a real front-line physician.
