Educate me about engine swaps, rigging kits and serial numbers

Hi again,

Let's say I can get hold of a nice 400R engine for a good price (not stolen) and was planning to put it on a small v-bottom... but it doesn't come with a rigging kit. Can I just buy a DTS single engine Mercury rigging kit off ebay and it will work? Or is there some wizardry with serial numbers and software versions involved? Is some proprietary Mercury setup software needed?

I.e. can I install everything myself or is a Mercury tech guy needed at some point because he has some secret sauce software on his laptop?
