Thread: Copper fuel line?

if you run an inboard boat here in the uk copper is a legal requirement, same with offshore boats. you simply run the lines of copper and where it needs to move you simply use flexible hose.. so could go from tank to splashwell in copper then flex hose from there to motor.... and by the way cars here using copper brake lines for about the last 50 years so nothing new about that. steel if you want cheap, or copper if you want to spend money.. you wont ever find steel on a good high class car for brake lines. unless stainless steel....

Yea ... I'd be worried to mix today's gasoline with copper. The ethanol content might have a chemical reaction that causes you to get arrested for BUI …

People have been using aluminum for fuel lines. What's the difference between aluminum and copper? I mean that as a comparison and devil's advocate. Both are reactive metals(unlike stainless) and both will corrode. Copper turns green and aluminum gets flaky or worse. where's the winner there? HVAC guys use copper all the time. They flare it, and its used in high pressure situations(high side of a/c systems).
I wouldnt use copper personally, because if I were gonna use a reactive metal for fuel lines, I'd use aluminum...........cost is waaaayyy cheaper.
And Chaz? that picture is awesome!!

One of the main tests of this system is to see how well the Bosch pump pulls the fuel UP to this height. I know all will say mount the fuel pump lower than the fuel. But this pump sucks it up this high and thru the filter very well. If you look close this is 1/2" copper line and I machined the filter base with 3/8" npt with a full 3/8" inner cavity for the heck of it. Instead of the standard 1/4" flow.

They say that because … if you run a Bosch dry for around a minute , it will seize up with no way to fix it other than replace it with a new one ..
If they are primed and have fuel in the feed line , they will continue to siphon . If there is air in the line … and you run the pump .. order a new one while your flippin the switch back and forth trying to get it to "catch" ..

Ok. I won't use copper.
I'll get stainless steel. What should I look for when ordering ss tubing? I will be flaring the ends to attach to fittings.

Buy a roll from Summit in the size you need. Thats where I buy my fuel stuff as far as braided lines and tubing. You can also buy anodized aluminum......cheaper than stainless and many betters in the corrosion dept than regular aluminum. Russell makes it. There maybe other brands. But it certainly bends ands flares much easier than stainless.

If your getting ready to plumb a boat ... Push~lock hose is better than using stainless mesh braided over teflon .. for sparks / grounding thru the hose etc.
The little -4 cap on the back of the filter is to prime the system with a squeeze bulb.
Those lil pumps can run 90 psi all day if you ask em too . They are terrible about lifting fuel like a vane pump does.
Chaz = thinkin, black~blue / black~red both look pretty good .. and isn't really isn't expensive if you buy the Jegs or Summit house brands .
I buy wire / cable / heat shrink / lugs /wire connectors .. from BestBoatWire.com
All their stuff is tinned wire and their connectors are the"glueshrink" kind.
Also pretty cheap in bulk …
