quicksilver or sierra water pump kit?
Would like to do a rebuild kit on my 96 2.5L Mercury 175. Seeing two kits available. One is quicksilver and the other is Sierra. Which is better? Also, it says the quicksilver kit (96148Q8) is for all short vane impellor motors 65HP-V6 how do I know if I have the short vane if I have nothing to compare it to? Is this the correct kit? Please forgive my ignorance, this is my first Merc.

Quicksilver/ merc is the oem kit. that's what u wanna try and use. Best thing to do is get on boats.net. look up ur motor and get the right part # then jump on Amazon and find that same kit little cheaper

I recently bought a couple sierra impellers to have as spares. I went to put one in a few weeks ago and it wouldn't even slide on the driveshaft, completely wrong dimension. Threw the other two away and re-ordered OEM. Impeller isn't worth it to save a few bucks.

That looks like the number for the kit with the housing. You can also get them without housing if yours is in good shape.
Kit with housing Quicksilver - 96148Q8
Kit with housing Mercury - 96148A8
Kit without housing Quicksilver - 89984Q5
Kit without housing Mercury - 89984T5

Thanks for the replies. This will be a great help. Hoping to get it apart this weekend and see what I am dealing with.

Last time I heard, the Sierra impeller was exactly the same as the Mercury impeller. Made by the same machine.
