    New Restoration and repower. No idea the make.

    Hello all,

    I grew up on Lake Winnipesaukee during the 70's. It was a great time to be on that lake. Race boats and ski boats, no noise or speed restrictions. Among a few row boats and fishing boats I have a 16' Tahiti lo pro that I used to scream around in. A few years ago, my godson came to live with me so he could finish high school. I wanted to have him experience some of the things I did when I was a kid. Especilly boating.

    That's why, when I saw this boat for sale on a country road about 14 months ago I stopped by to see if I could buy it.. The old (78) man told me he had maintained it well and everything worked. Transom sounded solid. No flex at all. The paint was great. Deck seemed solid. Engine ran with muffs. He wanted 2 grand. We settled on 1.

    He didn't have a title, but the bill of sale from the guy he bought it from in Arkansas. The name of the manufacturer on it said Shasta. Never heard of it. The only Shasta Boat Company I have ever found was a California builder of houseboats.

    A few days later I grabbed my godson and took the boat out. Wouldn't start. Called a mechanic, who came over the next day. He told me that while the motor was a 1975 650 Merc, it had a 750 power head. It had a bad stator and plugs. Waited a week to have those replaced. Took it out again. Motor ran fine. But my godson noticed water comeing in through a spit that ran the beam of the transom. Oh uh.

    Made it back to the ramp and went home. Noticed the new crack in the fibergalss of the transom. Was lucky enough to find Tim Bohn of Bluewater Boat Repair in Newport Richey. He grew up on the same lake I did, and used to run lo pro ski boats too. He also has a great reputation, and was referred by a few guys. It seems the old man forgot tom tell me the transom had rotted and he had repaired it. With 2 pine planks that he tried to glass in and paint... Needless to say, this disaster had Tim saying a few choice words.

    So, I finally get the boat back. It looked great. Tim did an incredible job. I had the motor put back on and the next day we launched it. Ran great for about 2 hours before the motor kept stalling. Turns out the fuel pump is bad. That's it I decided repower. Went to Miller's Boating Center in Ocala with the intention of buying a 115 Merc. When I got there, they told me they had a new 2019 150 Mercury. The deal they offered was so good I decided to buy it. I also had new instruments installed and a fuel gauge, new carpet and rebuilt the seats.

    So now its solid and running. Trying different props to get it to run fast. It was overpropped with a 14.5 inch 23p 3 blade. Couldn't get to the 6,000 RPM. Now it has a 14.5 inch 20 p 4 blade prop. Lake was to rough to open it up Saturday. Only got to 51.5 MPH at 5,650 RPM. Crazy chine walk at over 50. Suggestions about propping? Any idea of who made it?

    #1, what kind of steering setup do you have? Sloppy steering is the chit for contributing to bad handling. What is your prop to pad height?
    1990 Shadow bass boat w/ 2.4 200 Merc. Totally resto'd boat and love it!

    Hello rgsauger,

    Seastar hydraulic steering. It is in for service. Takes a Herculean effort to turn the boat to starboard at anything over 4,000 RPM. I'm a pretty strong guy, and it takes real effort to turn the wheel. It is nearly impossible to turn even enough to counter act the chine walk.

    Interstingly, the chine walk is spectacular between 5,100 to 5,300 RPM. If you can get through it, the boat settles down from mid 5,300's to 6,000.

    Installing a third prop. Mercury recommended a 4 blade 14 5/8 21 P wheel. I also bought a SE 400 hydrofoil, not so much for the hole shot, which is pretty quick, but for the stabilizing, and a little top end boost.

    The boat has no pad, just a V. The cav plate is level with the bottom of the V. See pic.
