Help with CLE lower unit seals
Hey guys, having trouble with local marinas finding the proper lower unit seal kit for this CLE I have. Boat motor is a ‘81 Mercury 225. The current seal kit they gave me is PT# 26-816575A3. I’m just worried because it says online that it’s for a 225 V-6 & Mercruiser Alpha Gen II. The other local marina said it’s the wrong kit & I need the one with PT# 26-55682A1. I’m kinda stumped & cant find anything online. Any help would be appreciated.

...yeah, that 225 & Gen 2 gearcase number they are probably looking up is for the newer 3 litre 225, not the old 225.

Throw that lower in the trash. Poorly welded skeg is waiting to give you a real bad day.

Like others stated, If going slow and not surfacing, it will probably be ok.
I know it's a garbage weld by looking at it. Been welding aluminum for a long long time, skegs included, and I won't weld one on anything fast.

Agreed. That weld is garbage. A welded CLE or Sportmaster is garbage. Find a new housing.

Sometimes its harsh around here I agree. but if your fast it's a safety issue. People with experience are sharing their experiences good and bad. I guess question is. are you willing take a chance ? U got a 50 50 shot at it

If the skeg doesn’t give way, that twisted spline prop shaft is going to let go. Either way, you’ll be lucky if all it is expensive after it breaks.

Guess I shoulda done a bit more research before wasting some cash... definitely not trying to see anything under 70 so for safety & boat sake I won’t be running this lower.
