The Gold Coast shotgun start was a.sight to see! Used to go out to the island off the Biscayne (104 st.) canal where we lived to watch. Helluva show.

That brings up another question, has anyone heard anything from/about Ronnie? After he got out of the Navy, he lived in his parents house. They had moved to Orlando. He later moved to an apartment off 79th St., just west of the bridge over the canal Dave Craig's was on. Livved with him there for a while. I moved to Tallahassee, last I heard he was living on one of the houseboats by Pelican Harbor. Someone said he later moved to Orlando to be near his parents.......

Ronnie did move to Orlando but after his folks died his life unraveled. Ronnie died homeless in the Tampa area in 2005. A sad end for a guy with such potential.

Dammit, not what I wanted to hear. He was 4 or 5 years older than me, always looked up to him growing up.

We were high school classmates and Ronnie introduced me to OPC racing. I got to co-drive with him and his dad in the 66 9 hour. I lost touch with him after he got out of the Navy. By then we were living different lifestyles. He never returned to his racing roots.

ID:	472867The Mercury powered #255 is yours truly. This picture is the start of my elimination heat. We went on to finish 2nd to Bobby Drewery in the finals. Bobby and I split heat wins. I won heat 1 and Bobby heat 2. We both broke the 5 mile record but Bobby took it home along with the Championship, First pic heat 1 second picture heat2 note Bobby's wake.

I remember a hand powered clock, one man standing behind it turning the crank as another counted down the time.

I wonder how that one worked? Fixed gear ratio? How would you control hand cranked RPMs?

I can only envision the excitement to have raced with 251 boats in the field
Or to watch 251 boats race by, whilst standing on a bridge, the shore or a backyard.
