    Smartcraft GPS hook up

    All

just put smartcraft gages in boat and wondering what I need to hook up the GPS for speed. Really not a fan of mounting the paddle wheel to the hull. Don’t need anything special just using it for speed.

    What motor?

    Your choices are....

8M0091565 GPS ant or a nema 0183 chartplotter if your speedo has the blue and white wires on the back.

    OR

A gateway and a nema 2k capable chartplotter. This will also allow you to put gauges on your chartplotter if it supports it

    OR

use the pitot sensor and get speed like that and use you lr chartplotter to get speed over ground. (Cheapest by far)

On my boat with 300xs and a smartcraft gauge I hooked a garmin gps antenna into a j box and the speed displayed on the vessel view. Not sure how I did it....that was a long time ago.

Me personally I'd hook up the pitot sensor but it won't be accurate. So the next step is the antenna

I have a Smartcraft gauge in my Challenger with a 250XS, and I just installed a speed sensor this year. I bought a new Garmin GPS puck 17X on eBay for $46 and a NEMA 2000 starter kit from Amazon. Connected it to the NEMA 2000 connection on the Smartcraft gauge and it works great. I did also have to connect the 'NEMA external power' connector on the gauge harness to boat 12V (this is how the puck gets power). Took me a while to figure this out but it works great and cost less than $100 for everything.
