3m 5200
How do you guys feel about bedding stringers and knees to the hull with 3M 5200? Then follow up with glassing in after the 5200 is cured. I’m almost to this stage in my Ventura build and have 2 tubes of 5200 caulk gun size tubes.

I thought I posted about this in Tnels thread but I can’t seem to find it. There is discussion about setting the stringers in 5200 though. I did some homework on this a while back and a very reputable hydrostream builder uses 5200 to set the stringers. As I understand it most of the strength comes from the glass not the wood.

Use it on anything you never want to get it off of it's great adhesive. But let it cure fully before you encapsulate it.

i bedded the base for the bilge pump in my jon boat in 5200, figured it was better than screwing it through the bottom. Holding up fine so far...

We used to call it 5200 for how many hours it took to wear off of your hands, knees, and feet.

Just curious...for something so important (to me) why don't you use west system epoxy that is tried and true?

Thats how I did mine. Was recommend to me from my material supplier. I let it set up in a warm garage for a few days before glassing over it. I'm not pro, so take it with a grain of salt.

Epoxy and wood flour make peanut butter. That's what I used and it worked great. Also works perfect for making your fillets at the square edges. 4" fiberglass tape is your friend.

Agree with Nitro Rat. I used System Three "silver tip" 2:1 epoxy. It worked great, wet out nicely, good stuff. Bought all my supplies from boat builder central.com

not sure on the advantage/disadvantage. I know some do it some don’t, I am now one of those guys that used the stuff. I will say it allowed me more time to manipulate my knees and stringers to exactly where I wanted them, I could even come back the next day and move things just a tad if things moved a bit. I’m relying on the strength for my knees and stringers to come from glassing them in to the hull not the 5200. The 5200 says it needs 7 days to fully cure, I knew when I set my stringers and knees into it I was done working on the boat for a week anyway, I let it set for the full 7 days. If a guy is in a rush to keep working 5200 is not the thing to use. Don’t know if this answers your question or not, I’m by no means a expert. I learn as I go.
