Rapid Craft 22 Twister Questions
Reposting- I initially accidentally posted this in Marketplace.
New member here; first post. I have the opportunity to buy a 1998 Rapid Craft 22 tunnel hull/ catamaran boat. From what I have learned in the past few days from other posts, it must be a Twister? It has a Chevrolet 454 I/O. From the pictures that Ive seen of this boat, it looks pristine. The owner says that its been garage kept. The owner is asking $15k for it. What can anyone tell me about these boats? Ive been performing internet searches all week, and cant find any information other than on this site. But, it seems most of the posts Ive seen on here are owners of the outboard motor version?
Is this really a Rapid Craft Twister, or another model?
Does anyone know how many of these I/O models were made?
Are they rare?
What are they worth?
Is the owner asking a fair price?
Does it appear original?
Are these good boats to own?
Would you recommend buying the boat, or walk away?
The owner says it runs 65 mph. Does that sound accurate?
As you can see Im looking for all of the information I can get! Thanks in advance!

The only one i have seen was a jet with a pro stock style big block, sounded wicked and was supposed to be fast but i never saw him leg it out. Twin outboards are really cool. At 65 i don't think it would be close to packing air. My Obsession doesn't get airborne till about 70. If it is still solid the price seems fair. I myself wouldn't be happy unless it went 100+ and i think it would take a ton of money to get there with an i/o.

I am always suspicious of rot in the floor, core, and transom of old boats. Bravo drive?

All Rapid Craft boats were built bullet proof. very little wood and sides are glassed together at seam then gel coated inside and splatter painted. even under the deck is gel coat where you can`t see. It`s a shame they went out of business. The gauge wiring could be better tho.

Wild Bill, can you please explain what you mean by the term, “packing air”? Honestly, I’ve never driven this type of boat - only a v-hull. So, if I buy it I’ll have to go into learning mode to learn how to safely drive and handle it. I’ve been told that the tunnel hull boats drive and handle differently. In fact, I was told that if I ever drive one I’ll never want to drive anything else. But, I don’t know details. Can you please enlighten me a little?

David, good question regarding which drive. I don’t know which drive is on it, but it’s something I need to ask. Which drive would be the preferred one in your opinion?

...looks to be a Bravo One drive, but which version, from that photo, is unclear...

“packing air”, it's when air gets under the hull providing lift. Not sure for a boat that only goes 65mph if that will ever happen to take advantage of tunnel hull design. Most don't “packing air” until 75mph or more.

That is about as much air that can be packed.Bet if you plugged that hole in the transom where that drive hangs out and put a 450R on it it would be as close to perfect a all around boat as you could get. But at 60 grand maybe not.

If you don't buy this boat, could you get me in touch with the seller?

I owned a 22 Twister with twin O/B's. I have been in a 22 twister with a 454 I/O that ran a lot faster than 65. I do not remember what the speed was, it was a long time ago. Either boat is very nice. The I/O is much heavier and had a nicer ride in the rough water. The twin O/B is much faster. A local guy owned a Twister with a single 300X outboard that ran about 90 mph. I believe there is no wood used in the manufacture of the boat other than the seat frames. No rot worries. Great boats.
