What cocktail of additives do you guys add to your 50:1 pre mix two strokes?
There's probably as many answers to this as people who run pre mix...
On my 1987 2.0l 150, I run the cocktail that my (now deceased, died at the 2017 Parker Enduro) 2.0 guru Kevin from R&R Prop Shop ran, Chevron Techron and StarTron, added to pre mix with Quicksilver oil.
But now it's been three years since I talked to Kevin and I obviously can't talk to him any more. And I have questions:
1) Since I run 50:1 pre mix, does that put me a greater risk for carbon buildup if I don't use those additives?
2) I can't get ethanol free gas, so I use motor fuel. But I use it pretty quick and am in the desert (super dry air) so I don't worry too much about the hygroscopic characteristic. What I wonder though... is the alcohol in the fuel actually helping me by keeping carbon buildup down?
3) What if I only use the Techron and StarTron in one or two tanks a year? IOW, is it a waste to use the Techron all the time every time?
What other additives and why, are you guys who use 50:1 pre mix doing? If any?

I dont use cocktails unless winter, only reason for that is, I go thru the fuel so fast it dosent have time to try go bad or separate. Would like to know if it helps carbon build up tho?
Tops of my pistons could use sum cleanin

I never used anything in my premix motors other than avoiding ethanol laced fuels. I always erred on the side of more oil than less which fouled up plugs at a rate of approx one set per season. Only maintenance done was fog it at the end of every year for storage. Crossflow v4

Toluene + Klotz + Mineral Spirits + Seafoam + Marvel Mystery oil …
All fairly inexpensive and readily available .
Toluene and Klotz = Toluene is straight 118 octane , Klotz is the same or a little less and has a good additive package .
Mineral spirits = is a excellent cleansing agent , and doesn't hurt flame propagation .
Same for Seafoam .
Marvel mystery oil = The electric oil pumps idle between 200 - 250 :1 , and go 40:1 @ WOT , with nothing but the gas side going thru the pumps and injectors .. A light machine oil is like grand-ma's chicken soup , might not help ~ but it sure can't hurt …

I use my ethanol mogas too fast to worry about phase separation too. BUT... What I want to know is, does the ethanol actually help clean (or at least prevent) carbon. I've read that it does. Might have even read it here on S&F. Seafoam is mostly alcohol anyway isn't it? (Not ethanol but others)

Maybe. I had my 2000 Merc 90 FourStroke (Yamaha powerhead) at the Yamaha dealer once in 2013. It was MASSIVELY cartooned up. Huge leakdown on a couple of cylinders. They said they treated it with some super heavy duty de-carbon treatment. It all came back and now it runs great. :shrugs:

Seafoam spray in the cylinders is great for dissolving carbon. Yank the plugs, trim up, spray cylinders heavy with sea foam, screw the plugs in, let it sit overnight. Yank plugs, spin it over, put the plugs in, run the pee out of it.
