Stupid question
Ok, just replaced the Teleflex steering cable on my Sea Ray 180 Ob (I know, ain't no performance boat, slow, but it's what I got, and I love 'em). Anyway, It has a 1980 140 horse inline on it and there are two (2) mounting holes to attach the linkage to, one close to the engine and another 2+- inches further away from the engine, which one do I want to use and why??? There is only one hole closer to the engine on my 1971 115 Merc.

The two holes are there to make stupid people scratch their heads and take their boat in to the shop

Both holes are the same, both threaded.

its probably for different length steering links, maybe dual motor setups? Use the one that lines up the best when your steering is dead center and motor is straight?

Yeah, they are both the same, you can hook to either one that is easiest to get to. The inner hole will give you a tiny bit more steering but it doesn't really matter. Most boats you see have it set up in the outer hole because it is easier to get the bolt in. Also, if you ever go to a front mount hydro cylinder the bolt will probably only line up with one of the holes (unless you get different offset brackets).
