Not exactly sure what he means by “alpha” but for the fishing lower units, non coned xr or 2.0/2.4/2.5 they are like $15 on ebay... drilling the retainer out with like no bigger than 1/4” in the circles cast on the nut will allow you to then use your impact to spin it off, if that doesn’t work go ahead and try to break the retainer ring off to remove it...that shouldn’t damage the threads at all...getting the retainer but off is the easy part...next thread is how do I get the bear carrier out...

He may be referring to the Alpha - stern drive unit . Same situation - suspect same nut .

Tru that’s my only guess too and I believe the retainer nut is the same larger size not the small diameter like the XRs...
edit: 4-3/8"
OP- check the manual for your part number but if its this one dont be afraid to trash the retainer they are cheap

I've found them for $7, but they add a few more days worth of shipping. One marina around here can get me one, but it will take 4 days. I'm headed to the lake for two weeks on Tuesday, so it looks like I'm just going to take a gallon of oil with me and check it every day. Then I can break stuff when I get back.

And yes... Mercruiser Alpha outdrive.
The bearing carrier is an aluminum thing and it is pretty easy to remove... depending on what type of sealant the last person used to install it. If they used Permatex #3 or #4 or Quicksilver Perfect Seal, it will be easy. If they used Indian Head gasket shellac, it will be a longer day. The Permatex or Perfect Seal responds well to heat. The shellac responds to a couple days of soaking in acetone.

In case you were curious, this is a way over-simplified TV version of how to do it. Mine is a Gen 1, so I don't have the allen/grub screw part, but same thing minus the pristine, new demonstration case.
