Is there any way to get the paint off? Paint remover?

yup. aircraft paint stripper. apply & let it sit for 20 minutes at least. do not disturb it by brushing or scraping. then stiff wire brush off. do not get wet & do it again. have to do it 2 or three times.

I'm going with what used on aluminum wheels... Aircraft remover and hi-pressure washer. I would think the wire brush would scratch.

Had a 65 horse Merc prop that was painted, took one of those round, small diameter wire brush with the 1/4 inch shaft sticking out the end and chucked it up in my drill, took the paint right off. Hell, it's stainless steel, it never scratched mine.

Paint stripper then wrap it in seran wrap . Keeps stripper from drying and can let it work for a couple hours.
