That gear case Is fine just put a tab on it....luke not sky hinewaljkwer…….

I’m guessing you mean torque tab... it has one, just didn’t get it in the pic. My main problem with the case is it’s ugly.

How bad is that crack at the top of the bullet in the back?
If you're going to fix that by welding it are you going to be changing the seals and if so you can heat the skeg up a bit and bend it back SLOWLY just don't rush.
I've bent them back cold too but I wasn't worried if if broke. So

yes I would replace the seals if it was heated up from welding. I have a 1982 35hp evinrude that I have just recently replaced the clutch dog on, I was a little bit hesitant on even doing it thinking I’d mess something up or forget how it went back together, well it really wasn’t that hard after all and everything works. Is my 1982 235hp lower unit gears basically the same thing on just a much larger scale? I ask this in case I don’t fix this gear case and swap the guts into a nicer case. Anyway, here’s a pic of the crack you asked about.Attachment 468990
I’m not good enough with a welder to fix this so I’d be at the mercy of paying to fix it which may cost more than a empty gear case. Local guy wants $300 to cut the skeg off, weld a new one on and repaint it, I didn’t ask him about fixing the crack in the pic, that would obviously add more cost.

Yeah I would stick with searching for another lower unit.
$300 for just the skeg then fixing the rest and hard to say there isn't any other damage that you can't see looking at the way that things been beaten up.
And like I said I would not weld a skeg on there period.
anything over a mild cruising speed and you're really pushing your luck

I know they're guys out there that can and do it and I've seen it done but is he fixing it for a cruiser or speed

I agree, the search continues. Is it pretty easy to swap the guts into a different case? Like I Said I had my 35hp lower in pieces and got it all back together. I just need to figure out what year cases will interchange with mine...

Good fresh gas a touch of extra oil and that motor will last and be a torque beast. I have a friend here that in the 10 yrs I have known him he has rebuilt fixed replaced his 235 he leans it out with stale gas. The last time he wised up and it's been good for a while. He has it on an 18 action. The whole shot is epic.

Yes, it should be very interesting what it will do on a Ventura... good thing is I have a gas station 3 miles down the road that has one pump that has gas with no ethanol in it. Thanks for the tip on the touch of extra oil.

I want to get a good service manual for this motor when the time comes I have to wrench on it. Anybody got suggestions on which one to get? I see there’s Clymers, seloc, etc...

Look on eBay Amazon for factory manual might take a little while but they show up. Might cost a bit more but worth it.

Stay away from clymers and seloc they tend to b wrong alot

There is a ton of OEM service manuals for OMC V6 motors on eBay. I bought the 1979 and 1980 versions. I think after that, OMC started putting all of the motors together in one giant binder because that’s all I could find for my current 1984 V6. I could be wrong, though, but I could not find a stand-alone 1984 V6 manual. You should have no problem finding a 1980ish V6 manual on eBay.
