According to the 1980 OEM Manual, a 1980 model with 20-inch mid weighs 396#. I would assume a 1982 model would be the same or close to this weight as well.

Well here’s the reason I asked the? Picked this beast up today for the future power on my Ventura build. Even compression on all cylinders, tilt and trim works, pisses water like it should, runs great, came with all controls, ride guide duel cable steering, hydraulic jack plate, and 2 stainless props. I’m hoping this sucker can at least get the boat on plane. Lol...

Well I’ve read a ton of stuff on this motor with the little time I’ve owned it. The motor seems pretty healthy, runs good, compression is good and even, it’s pretty darn clean for its age except for the gear case, skeg has some good chunks missing and is bent so I’ll definitely be looking for a nice clean gear case. My plans are to go thru carbs, fuel pump, thermostats, new plugs, water pump and probably put a set of Chris Carson reeds in it. Also I’ve read to adjust the timing from its factory setting, not sure to what tho?? Anyone with experience with this motor got anything to add that I can nip in the but right off the get go. Do I have to do any rejetting with new reeds and timing change? Thanks.

Timing set at 26 no jet change needed for reed change. Timing may be posted on air box to set at 28 but don't go there.
Remember to set total advance timing at 5000 rpm or above, use a test wheel or a cut down prop on the trailer in the waterLast edited by perfmarine1; 06-23-2020 at 11:36 AM.

Like I mentioned in the description of my motor my skeg is bent and gouged up, I stopped at a local prop shop and asked the owner if he had and gear cases laying around, he didn’t but said he fixes skegs. Then took me in the back and showed me a drawer full of skegs for different motors, said he cuts the old one off and welds a new one on then repaints everything. I asked if it would hold up at 90 mph, he said yes unless you hit something, well any skeg is gonna break hitting something that fast. My ? To you guys would this be a bad idea or can it be done. For the price he does it for I could probably just keep searching for a clean gear case....

your skeg doesnt look that bad.
Welded aluminum usually is weaker than the original casting so I'd be hesitant to run a welded on,replacement skeg in a hi performance application.limited skills

Quick answer.. no don't use a welded skeg.
Not worth saving a few bucks for how fast things could go wrong if that broke off.LETS GO BRANDON.... LETS GO BRANDON

Here’s some closeups. As you can see it’s got a pretty good hook to it.also right above the prop shaft you can see the split in the gear case, this split/crack could be fixed without the safety issue but what do you guys think about the skeg? I suppose I could grind away at the edge of the skeg till the missing metal blends out .... but how do you go about straightening the curve out?

What gears do you guys suppose I have in this motor, obviously the gear case isn’t the original but I’m assuming the internals are what they came with stock. The 1981 catalog states 14:26(.54) whatever that means... my motor is a 1982, I’m sure not much changed in one year... assuming the gears are stock will they work good for my hull?

Fellas, I’m looking for a clean gear case for my motor. What years and hp motors will parts interchange with mine? For example, I find a 175hp evinrude/Johnson motor that doesn’t run but is a complete motor. What year does said motor need to be for me to use parts off it?
