200 Merc on 21 action marine
What should I be turning for rpm on my 2003 200 carberated Merc. I can turn about 5900 with a 25 tempest light but when I have a fishing load and a fee friends I can barely get in plane. Can I or should I prop this motor to around 6200-6300.? I'm thinking my motor could be running a little rich or timing may be out of wack a little. Does anyone have any experience with this set up or motor. Thanks in advance.

yeah, prop it to turn a bit higher when light. motor can take it no problem. the tempest is a smaller bladed prop for such heavy loads. not much surface area per blade. on a side note, there's your difference between a 21 action & a 21 paramount. paramount normal propsize with a 200 merc is only 21 pitch. you can turn a 25 at a 200's rated rpm. amazing.

I believe a hook is involved? looks like a nice size pad from behind. History picture man ge to workWe have invented the world; WE see

That's about what I was running with my Paramount per Boathouse bulletin. Only difference was I was running a 23 laser2 prop. The boat was set up to fish and carry a load so the motor was down.
Those 2.5 liter motors don't carry a load as well as the 3 liter.
I'm only running 5 mph faster with a 250 same prop, hits the limiter when running light..Last edited by JBS; 06-14-2020 at 06:54 PM. Reason: Spelling

Haha ya I get that alot. Alot of people want to buy it especially when I go to the keys. I looked a long time for one. Got a really good deal on it the guy didn't even have it for sale. Anyways looks like my best bet is to have two props one for running light and one for running offshore loaded to fish. What does everyone recommend to prop it too when running lite 6000? It's just a stock 200 with oil injection deleted.

What's the height of the engine? propshaft to pad? You might be able to raise it slightly and get some RPM out of the Tempest. Do you have the vent holes fully plugged? Is it slipping a lot on takeoff?
I actually like the Tempest on a boat like that, maybe even trying a 23" or 24" Tempest for heavy loads and playing with the engine height. You could try a 24" Trophy as well as a comparison.

My prop shaft when it was set on a broken jack plate was set at about 2 3/4 below pad. I think with 12inches of setback now I can go a little higher. I have played with it a little bit but haven't even been any faster or more rpm. I had a 24 trophy and a 25 but got like no lift from it. I'm buying a 23 scorpion on Monday as they run about 2 sizes off I here but have a lot of lift and will see what that does. I also have a buddy that said I can try s 24 tempest.o and I plugged the top three wholes on each side with some little stainless plugs.

I'm still a little concerned it's running rich as it doesn't want to shift into gear without stalling unless I'm at about 1100 Ron Wich I feel is way high. Also I had a fishing load and a couple of people with me doing out the inlet and was giving it some gas to navigate through some seas and it flooded out on me and I had to put it in nuetrel and rev it a bunch to start going again. Pretty bad situation. I got an owners manual and am going to check the air fuel mixtures and have someone check the timing does this sound about right?
