C1 Big Bearing Gears in CLE or Sportmaster?
As the title says, will C1 Big Bearing case gears fit in any of the low water pickup cases like CLE or Sportmaster?
The sets I have are small shaft, 1.87, non-preload gears.
Thank you

CLE case may have drain plug in the front of the case so it would be yes if you know what to do with the guts as far as set up the sporty would have no way to drain the oil from it as you know sporty oil fill drain is in the carrier (along with late model CLE case's they both had big bearing propshaft)

Thank you TEXAS20225!
To clarify, (relatively) all the carriers with rear drains are for 1 1/4" big/fat shafts?
So to stick with my small shafts, I need to use an early CLE with a drain in the front.
(Which I believe the earlier CLE's were two holes).
All of my lower knowledge is from S&F and mostly your posts.
From a 2009 post you mentioned;
"I would recommend installing a 3.0 carrier part number 818763A10 it is cheaper and twice as heavy same small size prop shaft".
I am ordering a 818763A10 carrier.
I have most of the tools, a shim set and the manual but this would be my first build. You have previously mentioned "make sure you hold the forward gear lash to spec and pinion height . lash is .0018 to.0026, pinion.0025 thousandths"
Is this the key to the proper setup?
Thanks again for your help.

Thank you patches. I am running a 20" bass mid, not an offshore. I have read that the Geigertec can cause a bit of an exhaust restriction due to it being more beefed up. Does that 'hold water'?
Trying to get every last MPH with my setup.

A small dia hole or machine out and weld in a drain pipe? I’m sure it could be done I’m more curious to who has tried what? I can’t be the only guy who’s thought about trying this?

good eye KR the cle carrier does not have enough meat to drill the drain plug hole its a little smaller in the beefed up supports then rear drain carriers!!! not all no rear drain cle were 2 hole some had big shaft and case drain too so as ive said many times there is no other case Mercury made with more changes then the CLE's note sporty carriers are longer then cle and torqmaster carriers so are the gear coloums if you have a bunch of stuff over the years like i did you notice all sorts of little details. The specs you noted are right lash as you can tell is a little more forgiving then pinion height. i really enjoyed the years i spent only tweaking gear cases i coned quite a few before i stopped i copied my first coned case i got from JC back in 95 ( for over 10 years actually) it was before he sold out to Tooter it was a good design . motor building not so much to much BS from guys who always wanted good, fast and cheap to show up in the same sentence it just aint so. any info i can help with contact me Bobby V.

Are the sporty gears back cut or shaped to allow the oil to pass by? I was looking at a fishing BB carrier last night and the gear and thrust washer are so tight to the carrier even if I machined and added a drain tube it doesn’t look like the oil would drain past the gear into the carrier. I have a sporty bearing carrier but it’s empty so I don’t know how the sporty gear looks.
