If your going drag racing .. what tin you use is secondary .
Mandatory .. 9" Ford rear , Powerglide ( Marco Abruzzi up by U) and a big block Chevrolet .. a simple one 555 or 598 ci will go easy 9's @ 3200 lbs. 8's on the hose.
It's easier to put a BBC in a Fox body than it is to put a 460 Ford in one. Lots of companys make kits , headers , etc. to do the swap , I always made my own parts to do the swap.
LS's make good power because they have 15* heads . Unless you are going with a hair drier or two .. then they are just too small . A big inch one , your spending real money and it's still small

If you're looking to run 11 sec. 1/4 the 8.8" diff in the Fox body is strong enough. Just a parts kit and diff cover with bearing support screws and whatever gears ya wanna run. True, ya can't beat a 9" for strength but I imagine that would be around 1K+ more than adding stronger parts to the stock rear. But if you can afford it get the 9". Just food for thought.
Add this parts kit, this cover, gears and you are good to go.

My father in law has always been big racer , had all sorts cars and s10s , always old school tho N/A. Not big $$ run mid 6s in 8th. I have been thinkin of building one also ,since I can get a rolling chassis from him , but I will want a ls and add hair driers down the Rd we used stay all weekend at local track , it's a blast
The s10s are just simple to build and fun to drive

Often overlooked are the small pickups. get em for a song and lots of room for the transmission / power plant you want. Fuel cell right over the rear tires. Mustang front suspension clip is a popular mod.

There’s tons of em now. Stock bottom end ls with the sloppy treatment is cheap as heck and will push a fox to 9’s. That s10 is bishr and he works for lingenfelter iirc so a little fancier but still a stock truck motor. If you want to get a little more wild on the cheap these guys did a good job. This is also a stock bottom end iron block 5.3 with a cam and an s476 borg single turbo through a glide

I narrowed plenty of Dana 60's , still have bushings to fit flanges or floater ends .
Can do 12 bolts , 8.5 late model and 8.8 Ford .. Like the NHRA I'm not a fan of C-clip axles , and have yet to find a C-clip eliminator kit that didn't leak ..
9" Ford , have tooling to go , floater , small Ford , big Ford , Lamb , or Olds/Pontiac ends .. As Dave mentioned , only pinion that is supported on both sides of the gear .. Free country .. you can go with a heavier , weaker , third member if that's what you really want .
$400 dollar LS .. I think your 10 years to late .. maybe a 4.8L with 300,000 thousand miles on it ..
5.3's .. still small bore , small valves , small power. Force feed it and make big block power .. then feed another one between the rails every month or two ..
Throw one of the heads into the bleachers or buckle a rod in half , same outcome. True it costs more, but they make heads for old school pee-wee Chevy's in std 23* as well as 18 , 15 , 13 , 12 and 11 degree valve angle's . From what I've seen , they tend to make more power and last longer in those latter configurations.
The cup boys were turning em 9100 last week in Martinsville . Just sayin ..
I don't hate LS's , I bought a totaled Escalade with a 6.2L about 6 months ago . I reckon I should go get the motor , harness , brain , gas pedal and transmission out of it one of these days .
The idea that they are cheap brought out the squids in droves. They think that they should get a cage installed for $100 , a housing set up for $50 etc. Once reality set's in , most of those projects never get finished .
I was in the chassis business for 28 years , I might not have seen it all .. but pretty much , seen most of it .. LOL
Billy Harper's ( Kentucky Gov .. or ran for that office ) old Pro / Mod Viper. I replaced all the tin work with carbon .. lost 134 lbs . Built headers and mounts for a 5.300" bore space 965" inch Buck motor . With 5 guns lit , has been 3.70's @ 205 in the eight ..

I really do get a kick out of all these records ... welp , that don't really exist .
It's tough to lie when the score boards dont lie and can be seen from the space station. Since they really haven't put a dent in the racing books , yet yearn to be noticed .. >
that's the worlds fastistist , stock bottom end , 4.8 , single flee-bay GT-35 clone , non intercooled , pump E-85 , 235 tired , stock steel rimmed , used 3.73 geared , faded red with ripped red interior , spare donut wheel in the trunk 3445 pound , fox rustang .. period !
Chaz = thinkin, to each their own ..
