Thread: Any car drag racers on board?

Yea, I hopped on ebay yesterday looking for one... $hit out of luck as there are NONE!!! Oddly enough I saw one not long ago that was a hotrod. Can't remember where???
A guy that I shared a building with did detail work for the used car lots. He had one of those small LTDs (or what ever it was?)... the uni-body ones, probably shared a lot of components with the Mustangs. It was a old police car and had a 5.0 HO EFI. That thing would fly for a 4 door! Had 140 on the speedo! I wanted it for a sleeper!

The cheap old cars are gone now. And I don't mean real old, mid 70's to mid 80's are like the new muscle cars and priced that way. Unless you want to build something yourself to build it, best to buy something done.

Understood and agreed.
I looked at racejunk a week ago and saw nothing.
Last I looked (yrs ago), it was packed.
When 5.0 Stangs came out, it looked to be the replacement for the bazillion cut up ‘68 Camaros.
When the big body sedan, mid ‘80’s GMs (F bodies?) got popular, I saw that as the next market shift.
Not much new since then.
Id say my idea of the Fairmont is over.
In addition to lack of supply, as you said, that car would likely be grocery getter donor and spend a yr on jack stands which I don’t want to do.
Im not in hurry so time is on my side.
Near zero $$ in that fund yet, unless someone wanted to do some horse trading
Also in agreement, the most entertaining deals I’ve seen have been the cars that already the go fast parts installed which would allow me to build my first V-8 in 20+ yrs and go racing.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

BTW, I have a friend that races a Fairmont wagon w/a Coyote motor and a surfboard on the roof.
And it’s fast.
Ill go talk to him when I get more serious.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Not sure how good the platform is, but I am seeing a bunch of c4's up for sale around here. Most are 3-7k and usually in pretty good shape.

I still have some saving to do, and probably 6 months away from flipping the switch but I plan to have $10k to go shopping with.
I think the older Vettes are some of the best deals out there but not what I want.
A street legal fox body would be tough to beat unless something special pops up.
Id do an old ‘60’s car but not for $10k.
We may go to one of the local tracks tonight just to snoop around.

Best I ever did was 12.86 with a 69 Road Runner, 383, 4 speed, 800 Holley, 292 degree roller cam, 4.88 gears, drove it to the track, uncapped the headers, raced, hooked up the pipes and drove home. Never made a payment on anything but Mopar and I can't believe I'm saying this, but gave it a lot of thought years ago and always thot best, cheap way was a 454 BBC and a powerslide trans, find a early Nova body or the 68 later body.

C5 is wayyyyy better to start with. Already ls powered. Cheap and easy 12’s all motor. Cheap and easy 11’a on spray. Capable of 9 seconds without going to crazy on costs if you boost it and do the stock suspension/trans upgrades
to get a C4 running deep 12’s you could do with a stock motor and spray it so long as it’s an LT1 car. TPI simply pass on those unless you want to build a whole new drivetrain and engine management system. Carb on the cheap works too
super cheap c4 tpi or cross flow car. Stuff a Carbed sbc th350 combo in with decent heads and a good size cam it’ll run 11’s all motor and 10’a on the juiceLast edited by LakeFever; 06-12-2020 at 06:59 PM.
