Pad Bottom all the way. Steve introduced me to high performance boats 24 years ago, count me as a true believer.

I have only driven pad V bottoms. Could a stepped hull with less lift be more stable than a pad boat? It would be slower with limited power but if HP was no object faster? Assuming mortal drivers.

Steps are great....Till you make a turn that's just a lil too tight... And then, the stern passes the nose....

OK, How about a stepped Pad?
In my case a single stepped Pad on a modified round bottom Sidewinder.
The two center planing strakes are incorperated to form a Tunnel so in fact what it is Im considering is a single step pad/tunnel.
The step would start about 4ft6 from transom and forward of the step would be the original radius Vee.
Air would be introduced to the stepped tunnel via an internal duct.
Basically a stepped version of the boat shown in the first few seconds of this attached link, but on a 16ft Sidewinder for 70mph.

One reason Im considering the step is it solve the geometry problems of putting a pad on a round bottom boat that didn't originally have one.
The boat is stripped bare to the hull at the moment and the transom and stringers are out.
Im serious, this boat will be built to go fast but Id appreciate any input from those with knowledge.
Cheers
Phillip

Pad--light boat, relatively smooth water, very high speeds
Step--heavier boat, offshorePer Rock:

He never did any steps. Just bolt on water dams and some pad mods. The dams were an idea to lift the hull quickly for drag racing. The idea was stollen from the 80`s when I raced with the SORA and the Weeks/Cain team had some very interesting boat bottoms. Wayne`s Vandal had the water dam`s that kept water under the boat with the only exit being the rear of the boat. No water went out from the sides and was forced to the rear by the dams to produce lift. Kind of a crude Mod-VP thing on a 14ft boat. I bought Jerry Cains Vector and it was extensively modified just like Mr Wilburs but no steps.
The point in my story is to compare one idea (water dams) to keep water under the boat and the other (steps) to introduce more air.
I suppose a Pad/Step combo bottom would be the Fountain offshore boats. Can`t argue with their success.Last edited by Da Bull; 11-25-2020 at 05:26 AM.
