Why can't your have both a pad and steps. Fountain Powerboats have been doing it for years.

Like my pads. I have owned several STV and have always gone back to Allisons or Hydrostreams. Wouldn't know a stepped bottom if it bit me on the leg.

The easiest option is to as mentioned already just to convert the round bottom to a Vee and sharpen up the strakes so they dont look like they are fashioned from Plasticine.
However the question on my mine is why didn't the guys who designed the Sidewinder do this in the first place?
I know this round bottom Vee design was common in the 1970's.
Would a Vee conversion at 19 deg deadrise on a Sidewinder still chine walk? and being a relatively simple conversion one would expect that a few Sidewinders/Panthers would have been converted here in NZ where we love to tinker but Ive never seen one with a conversion.
They also tend Porpoise in hard turns which I suspect is due to the forward Chines.
The Strakes also curve in toward the keel at the bow so one of the first jobs will be to fill in the forward Strakes on the inside so they can be ground off and re-positioned from the outside once the Hull is flipped over.

No it just was designed to go 45mph.

I run pad bottoms. Vents are ok but very tricky to get right. I concentrate on giving the hull adequate bow lift using the strakes without having to use much if any positive trim. That combo has always worked well for me. No porpoise and no china wok. Just a linear thrust with everything lined up.

Agree. You can. These XCS 21's from Lavey have a delta pad and two steps. Unique design. Most of them were I/O over the years.

Hulls with both design features allow one to go fast without a ton of positive trim and still have the pucker factor in turns.

I own a twin step 27ft Chaudron Race boat and a pad vee 22ft Speedcraft open boat. They run completely different to each other and the suitable driving style is completely different. My stepped hull likes to run level and 1/3 of the hull remains wet at all time at WOT (80mph) with a single 300 XS and does not like negative trim. My padded speedcraft runs much drier at WOT (95-100mph) with a 250XS with only a couple of feet in contact with the water. Cornering is also different. I need to trim negatively on the padded hull when cornering hard to grip well whilst my stepped hull prefers cornering with a slight positive trim and "skids" its way around a corner. Obviously this does not apply to all stepped bottoms and my stepped Chaudron weighs nearly double of my padded vee Speedcraft hull so not really fair to compare.
