175hp Mariner?’s
Fellas, this is the motor on my Valero, what can you guys in the know tell me about it? I’m wondering if it is a 2.4 or 2.5? I know it’s a 1985 with less than 100hrs on it, it is all stock except for the lower unit and I removed the oil injection last year and went to premix after reading all the stories on it. This is the motor I might put on my Ventura after it is finished. Thanks.

...142.2 cu. in. / 2.4 litre chrome bore... in a little circle cast into the back of the cylinder heads, you should/might find "3 3/8"...which denotes the bore size/diameter of a 2.4 motor. its 200 h.p. at the crank that year, 175 at the propshaft.

Thanks Fujimo, were they/are they good reliable motors. This one runs perfect and is so clean you could eat off of it. Do you know how much it weighs and what safe max rpms are? Also what’s the difference between this and a 200hp of the same era? Maybe carbs and timing... would it be reasonably easy to crank a few more hp out of it or would I be better off just finding a 200 for my Ventura? At least I know what I have with this motor and not someone else’s problem.

don't touch the damn thing. leave it alone. simply make sure you always use good quality gas & oil & enjoy it as it is. its not worth doing anything to it. specified operating r.p.m. range is 5300-5800 for that motor, that year. great motor "as-is". once a year put a new fuel-water separating filter on it.

Check your compression and maybe cut the heads and bump your compression a bit. Also put in set of Chris Carson reeds. Run pennzoil XLF and enjoy it!

I’ve always run amsoil hp in it and I have a gas station that has 91 octane non reformulated fuel that I feed it. The only quirk on the motor is the trim leaks down very slowly, if I trim it up half way or so and come back a few hours later it will be all the way back down... this is the 3 ram trim, can this be fixed or should I shop for a newer style trim setup?

Attachment 467030 I found this on Craigslist, would this bolt up? It says short tuner, not sure what that means. Looks like an offshore mid, has the bracket and trim pump which is what I might need to replace anyway if I can’t rebuild mine.
