    Hot sensor? ?

My J90 has been going through some little issues. Yesterday, while idling at the dock, cowling off, the rpm started to increase from its "just above idle" setting. When I got to the control and reduced the rpm there was heavy smoke coming from the port side of the engine! Taking the bailing scoop I poured water on what looked like fire! Soon as I cooled everything down I discovered, no fire, but a little cylindrical item, much like the old turn signal blinker on automobiles. I have not found any description on wiring diagrams that match the size or location of this part. I have a picture of where it is but can't seen to load it.Click image for larger version.

Looks to me like a rectifier. Converts ac voltage from the stator to dc voltage to run your boat/charge battery. Those can and will go up in smoke like that. But check for corroded wires. The sheilding gets old brittle and flakes off, and the wire inside will corrode. Look for any oozing glue coming out of it or if it just looks burnt in general. I don’t know if a stator can ruin rectifiers or not.

Loose battery connections can make those give up the ghost too
