OMC Drive Shaft Evenrude Johnson.
Does anyone know what material the upper drive shaft is made of?

I certainly don't know the alloy content, but I've had Chris and Stan Carson make me a couple of drive shat stubs for my CCC restorations. He told me they are HARD!!! - went through several tool bits.

I thought the upper was made of some grade of mild steel and the bottom from stainless, friction welded together

OMC shafts never rust, thats was a Merc feature for many years
Older one piece were friction welded, top some form of stainless and bottom very hard steel

The tops were SS and the bottoms were 8620, case hardened to a depth of .030 after grind. At one time the 2 were plug welded together, but had a reputation on breaking. They went to a shrink-interference fit with Locktite. I don't recall the friction welding.

That I don't remember, but suspect it was 304.

Interesting note. The first use of friction welding at OMC was the spline shaft on the end of the rotary snowmobile engine crankshaft.
