    water pump melt down

Uncovered fishing boat to use tomorrow. Noticed things out of place and key on. Used to be nice young kids where I kept it,they grown older and become problems.

    1997 OMC 200 HP

Water pump housing cracked and melted and impeller toast. All the pieces are there.

Put new pump in and very little pressure. Check one thermostat and it was clean

Is there something else that could have melted. Powerhead base or ????

Yes kids fired it up,no water and total melt down,

Entire pump replaced.Low pressure and motor gets hot. Will do compression test today to see if more damage was done.

Will pull lower unit out today and connect hose directly to water intake pipe.

If I remember right, under power head is a gasket, water jackets, and exhaust deflector. I might inspect them to see if they melted.

Blow air pressure backwards through water system through water pump tube in case one of the impeller vane got up there

I would of said the same but if no water then no parts could be lodge up there I think.

Upper - lower stainless steel plates in correctly? New plastic housing with new stainless liner and of course the correct impeller? Those are the pump internals and externally the connecting pipe to the power head. My FWI - having just gone through the pump rebuild on an 88 hp Javlin. The original housing was melted so just did it all. Had to have run dry for too long to melt the housing.

I think people also fire them up with no water for" split second " to make sure it will start etc b4 they get to water, and if they do that few time over course summer if will melt bottom plate slowly but surely. Just seen that happen alot , also done that myself when I 1st started messing with these things. thought it b ok if it just started and cut it rite off
