24 volt starting?
I'm having a problem I'm hoping is an easy fix. A friend bought a boat that has 24 volt trim. The problem is the starter is also hooked up to the 24v system, it sounds like the flywheel is going to fly off. The first time I tried to start it the solenoid stuck on and I had to unhook the battery cable from the solenoid to get it to shut off. It stuck on even after turning the key off and turning the battery switches off. I replaced the solenoid with a good used one and it worked perfect about 8 or 9 times. The 10th time it stuck on again while I was checking timing and I had to unhook the battery cable again. Is it possible it's overloading the system and frying the solenoid?

...Why don't you install a 24 volt solenoid for the 24 volt system, so your not welding closed the under capacity 12 volt solenoid?

Why don't you run the starter off of 12v and the trim on 24v? We do that on drag boats. No bid deal and easy to do

I didn't know it was 24v starting originally and didn't have a solenoid to handle it. I changed it to 24v trim and 12v starting and now all works good. After a long day sometimes the simplest things don't make any sense.

If the battery disconnect wouldn’t stop it then it needs to be wired correctly. A disconnect should be wired to shut off everything in the boat. In some cases you may need to do two disconnects. I never understood why people would install one and then bypass it for certain functions

I would like to wire my boat with 24v trim. Is there any way to wire it so I can start motor on other batt if main batt dies?
