I am going to be installing a jack plate on a figerglass hull what is the recommended sealnt to use on the bolt holes . Should I smear sealant covering where the jack plate touches the transom? I have seem 5200 and silicone and every under the sun. Just want to do it right

5200 is a good choice if you never EVER want to remove the jack plate as its a adhesive as well as a sealant. On a Baja I owned with a jack plate that (I had professionally installed) there was a small bead/lip of sealant around the entire plate where it touched the transom which I believe was the result from covering the entire plate area like you referenced. I am not sure what type of sealant was used but it was fairly hard like 5200 but was clear, I do know it wasn't the normal water resistant rubber GE silicone from Home Depot. Not sure what color your hull is but last I knew 5200 didnt come in clear so you may not want the white lip from 5200 around the plate if you go that route. I am sure someone will chime in with the name of a clear product.

put a small circle around each hole on hull, and on bolt , avoid threads. if you go around whole plate, you can trap water between the two, not good.
