Back from the dead, 1979 Action Marine - Pics & Video
Hello everybody! I haven't been active in quite a few years, but since I'm on lockdown I've found my way back here and thought I'd share my baby with you all.
She is a 1979 Action Marine, 16ft or 17ft (has been debated on this forum, see my post history). I started this project before I had a drivers license and now over a decade later I'm a licensed engineer and STILL working on it. Lets just say she has since gone through A LOT of iterations. All of the work has been done by yours truly; fiberglass, mechanical, design, you name it. Probably over 1000 hours of work at this point and don't want to think about how much $$$ lol
I've learned a lot along the way, most importantly to respect the beast.
Specs:
- repowered 3 times, starting with a 150 and now currently powered by an oldschool modified Yammy 225 Excel
- spinning a 28p chopper
- topped out at 85mph with power to spare, just not rpms (need bigger wheel)
- oldschool hynautic hydraulic steering system
- jack plate by Bob's, many structural modifications to transom and hull
Major Incidents:
1. blown up an engine on it at 70mph due to low water pressure
2. sank it completely (salt water above cowling)
3. split the hull while wave jumping out at the inlet due to rotted stringers (this is how I found out)
4. stood the boat up 90 degrees vertically after getting caught in freak cross waves at mid-speed with full gas tank
4. cheated the grim reaper a few times over the years.

Let me know what you guys think!

If that is you in the second pic then you have it all figured out. Having fun in your labor of love is what this sport is all about.

The bow was very high. Is that for fun or speed?

...with the boat on the trailer & the shifter in neutral, slowly rotate the propeller with one finger, while focusing on the center of the end of the propshaft. this is to see if your propshaft is bent or twisted. this can sometimes be the cause of your vibration issues. next time you slide the propeller off, also take a close look at your propshaft splines, as they can also be slightly twisted. in other words, it may or may not be the propeller thats causing your vibration.

I've checked for any wobble while rotating the shaft and couldn't perceive anything with my naked eye. Also, my chopper is a merc racing prop and the only vibrations I have with that one is when the prop is breaking the surface of the water. It goes away after the transition though. I'm pretty sure this is normal.
yeahh I think I got a dud. but that was actually quite a few years ago now since I bought it- so too late to send it back.
I LOVE the Excel! She's ridiculously reliable and very responsive. I'd like to remove rev limiter to use more of that power but don't want to remove electronic ignition or the knock sensor, that's next on the list besides a prop upgrade.
