Update! I've sanded, compounded, and polished but I think the black gel is too oxidized. At first it looks amazing but after a few days, I start getting microscopic white dots which I can only believe is pitting in the gel itself. It looks 100% better than it did but I cant keep it black black like I hoped. I can live with it for now but I think paint or clear is my only option

I tried to explain that but was shot down by those who have sanded and polished for countless hours. If you sand that down a just shoot a cote of high quality automotive clear on it, it will last for years if you prep it correctly, this will probably take less time than it did to get to where you are at now. If and when you do the gel coat job, removing that clear will be easy.

The polish has fillers that hide the true appearance, in a few days/weeks the real surface oxidation shows back up. Use a compound that doesn't have them and wipe it down with Windex to see what you're really left with. You should spend twice as long to buff out 1000 with 1500 in an area. Just to get the 1000 scratches out.

I meant gel coat thats clear. Why not spray that over and polish? The auto clear works but ehhh chips and scratches and looks kinda bad quick. Its not cheap either and if it is cheap product its not worth using imo.
