Help Evinrude Help with 1985 Evinrude 235 2.6 XP

Help with 1985 Evinrude 235 2.6 XP - I just purchased a project Baja 220 Sport that came with an Evinrude 235 2.6 XP. It was a project of a gentleman who passed away. I bought it from his widow. She tells me her husband went through it and there was only one last thing to do. She could not tell me what.

I am no outboard expert...have some mechanical ability and have done some repairs on other outboards I have owned.

I can turn the motor from the flywheel so it is free.

It has no corrosion at all and looks to be in really good clean shape. Where should I start with this project? If I brought it to a mechanic what could I expect for cost to evaluate? Is it worth putting $$ into it if it can be made to run well?

Can someone tell me what it might be worth as is and if it was in good running condition?

    Anyone interested in buying it?

Just need some help with direction on this project.

    Thank you.

Do you have any pics where in Maine?
What it's worth hard to say but there have been some on here they couldn't give away. Not to say it's not worth getting it running depending on how much or how much work but said it was only one last thing..

Would start by visually going over the motor real well fuel lines etc and might get lucky and youll see what needs to be done..
If you don't see anything..or don't find loose parts etc
Try turning it over..see what happens
Then start with checking spark fuel etc..hard to say without seeing it.

Pics you have to adjust size so it wider than high or vice versa...I don't remember
Will try and look at pics really good later and see if I can see anything..
Maybe someone will see something and you'll get an idea

But I dont know if I'd put any work or money into that money it's to clean and looks good.. I mean it doesn't look
    JK..
Yea if it were me/my motor id get it running but that's me.
Don't know if you'd rather have newer motor.

Like I said it's hard to say I know the last few on here they couldn't give away..only reason I didn't take it were to far..
I like the older omc and those are easy to work on no computer efi so..

I'd look over the motor if you can and if you don't see anything like David said spray a little fog oil in the cylinders turn over by hand first.. just to make sure you don't hear anything or feel anything stick..
And if that seems fine if it's on the stand you can try turning it over see if it wants to start or starts
Never know maybe he told her there was one more thing but maybe he did but and didn't get to,/remember to tell her before...

    Starting

Thank you for your help. I have sprayed fogging spray in the cylinders. I have never started an outboard this way. I bought a remote start switch and have the battery. How do I set it up to turn it over?

I have fresh gas with 2 stroke oil in a Evinrude 6 gallon tank that can be hooked up to the motor, as well as the hose adapter for the water pump.

Do you have ear muffs..for water supply
Run hose to motor and hook up and secure ear muffs
It's on a good strong stand..?
    Hook up gas and battery.
Hook up (Plug in) the red plug remote starter.

-I would tie or secure the motor so it doesn't move
    from side to side
-turn on water..make sure water is flowing
    -squeeze primer ball
-and turn key turn motor over and hopefully motor starts
Let me know how it goes when you go to start

In the pics I don't see anything that looks out of whack.

I went through this last fall and I can list what I did...
Sprayed Fogging oil from Seafoam in each cylinder
    Rotated by hand.
Checked for spark at each cylinder.
Rebuilt the carbs and checked the reeds by looking into the throat of the intake.
    Replaced the water pump impeller.

I think tomorrow I'll be pulling the boat out of the garage, throwing the ears on it and firing it up. If all goes well I plan to head to a local lake to see how it runs after that.

    Good luck with yours!

    Starting my motor

Thank you for the information. I decided I would go the safe route and have a mobile marine mechanic stopping by tomorrow to see if we can fire it up. Opportunity for me to learn from a professional and at $50/hr not a huge investment. Feel that as I don't know the exact history of the motor and what has been done, this is the safest and cheapest way to find out what I really have. I will keep everyone posted on the findings.

I see The Telltale fitting is broken on the back of the motor and the water hose is right there with part of the fitting busted in it you'll need to fix that. According to your model number it's an 86 2.6 XP but the cover is wrong, serial number is STL that makes it XP if I'm seeing that correctly. Anythink you need to know about these motors I can help you with I run two of them on a cat rebuild them several times have done hundreds of them just let me know if there's anything you need to know about that motor.
