Question mercruiser 5.0 2000 interupter switch

Hello i thought i had a bad interrupter switch? when i manually push the plunger in the engine will not stall!, i bought a new switch same thing, so i hardwired to coil and ground but that shorts the engine out instantly when grounded? shouldn't the switch be normally open? the switches i have are normally closed, so i cant hard wire the way i want, could i have blown the new switch into a normally closed circuit. the switch does operate if i have a meter to it does show open close, what the heck is goin on?? its driving me nuts!!! simple but still cant get out there yet! thanks guys any help would be great!! just 2 purple wires from the switch with a connector on the end, just a plunger switch not the old metal bendable one

The interrupter switch will not kill the motor. It just interrupt,s it to slow down RPM, so you can slide an ALPHA out of gear. If boat is not in water, you may not notice much difference in RPM. I don,t understand you can,t get out there. If you are trying to back boat off trailer, and motor dies, you probably have a bad shift cable.
