1985 charger 20 gt?
Hi guys,
My name is jay, brand new to the forum, just sold our cruiser and looking at a couple classic lake rockets for cottage season. While at my marina I came across and abandoned charger, has been sheltered while it was stores though. The hull number reads as a 1985 but the model was super difficult to find. In an earlier thread saw a brochure pic calling it a 20 gt. Any information I can get on it would be greatly appreciated. I'll attach a photo

If floor, transom and bottom check out OK these were a very good boat. Much larger hull than the more popular 18DL.
Mid 80's Chargers were the better one's made.
These 20's do need power, 200hp minimum.

Thanks peterse90! It has a big evinrude/johnson on it, at least 150(no stickers on cowling). Any chance there's information on their worth? I know it's very dependent on condition, the transom seems solid, underside has couple light spider cracks, couldn't get in to check the floor. I'll try and get some more pics. Depending on the deal I'd like to clean it up and repower with at least a 225

IMO 150 is not enough.
I looked at one last August (no power) on a trailer near Orillia that didn't look too bad, it sold quite quickly and I'm guessing it went for about $4,000 CDN.
If you found one with decent power I would think you are in the $5000 to $8,000 range. A decent 18DL gets about $5000 so a good 20 should get about $1,000/$1,500 more.
I ended up getting a 19 Cougar with a Merc 200 on a trailer.

Get the boat surveyed by someone knowledgeable. Not very many 35 year old boats don’t need restoration

I may be able to get it for a song, so I'd rather avoid a formal survey. I'm fairly voiced in cruisers, is there something in particular I should keep an eye for on this type of boat? I did a rough transom test lifting and flexing the outboard, no signs of transom flex there, also removed a couple screws and stuck an awl in, was stiff to the touch.

You also want to check the floor and look for blisters on the bottom. Having a moisture meter would be a big help but not while the weather is cold.

Check the floor, core, and transom. Or you could buy my brother's 1989DL w/89 Johns 200 GT. It's a good looking boat from 20 feet and the motor has been more reliable than my Mercs. There are lots of restoration threads on SnF so you can see what the boat probably needs.
