02 XR6 150... again
I posted few months ago about needing a new powerhead for my 02 XR6 150 and was asking about going bigger. Well I opted out and was set on a 225optimax but $8k for a 2004 is just more than I want to do right now. I was asked why not just have the one cylinder redone instead of the entire powerhead (110-115 on the rest of the cylinders) and after reading around, some say yes,, some say no,, some say it would make the motor unbalanced,, some say the 2 stroke motors aren’t balanced begin with.. so I figured to get the best answer I would ask the motor gods... so, opinions. Is it a safe,,ok,,good idea to just have the 1 cylinder redone or NOT?

No it's not a good idea , it would need to b stripped down and sent to machine shop, let them measure everything and tell u what every cyl needs to b healty , now if 5 r in spec after a hone for new rings ,then u can buy new for just the 1 cyl that needed "work" , dont stress on the balancing. 8 out of 10 times ,it needs more work than just 1 cyl
Mainly from out of round yet the bore looks good

Boring only one hole makes zero difference as far as balance. They run fine with several different sized pistons. As long as holes are in spec hone and ring and go boating.

What about compression? Like I said 5 cylinders are 110-115.. let’s say the new one is 130.. the manual says 110-135 with max difference of 15psi.. is that extra 5psi above max going to do any harm?

I wouldn't do just one cylinder go through the whole block all 6...
But if it the other 5 are low (but they're even?)would need work and doing just the one would be a waste
Is there a reason your thinking of doing just the one?

Nothing is really wrong with the rest, mechanic looked at it and said just from what he could see without actually breaking it all the way down that he felt like I could get away with just doing one. Really no need in replacing them if nothings wrong... but I could be wrong lol.

sounds like the mech is gonna half-ass it with justa hone, new piston and ring... thats justa "patch".. ta make "ONE hole bigger" takes boring.. ya can't do that without takin' it completely apart... unless thats what he's is suggesting??.. jmo.

Your 110-115 numbersz indicate to me you have a gauge issue. Might be possible but when you see 5 cylinders all the same but low it's hard to imagine them all wearing the exact same. Like I stated before ALL cylinders must be within spec or they need bored to oversize. It don't matter how many are oversized they must just be within spec as in round and straight. Your mechanic can guess they are all OK but till he tears it down and measures things it's just a guess and it has to come apart anyway.

X-ray vision? Unless he's Superman need to take it apart to be sure...
Just Putting new a new piston and ring in is just a bandaid
A lazy one at that..

why would anyone think the remaining 5 "good cylinders are not next in line is a great mystery to me its all about wear, age and general motor use they do NOT last forever . its only my way of thinking you can pay for taking it down and putting it back together twice in a short time. in my rebuild tenure i would not ever just fix one hole on any block!!!!! buts just my .02

Ok. I appreciate the opinions again. For as much as he has quoted me, I think I’m better off just buying a powerhead off of eBay. Few hundred dollars cheaper and won’t have to wait on mine to travel around the world and back

Well if the gauge is good you don’t have to wait for it to read 109 to redo the bore.
doing just one is fine as long as the rest are 130 might with 120
at 110 I’m going to suggest a leak down and maybe all 6 because you’ll be back in a month or so to do another bore.
also why did anyone do compression with it running low power or something.

Best I remember he said around $4800-$5k. I can get a rebuilt powerhead on eBay for $4k. Putting in on will be a different story. I’m going to attempt it myself, motor doesn’t work anyways as is lol. Plus I like a challenge. May have to get them to adjust the carbs
