It’s a calculated risk. Mercury is making money selling warranties because more don’t break than do. I wanted to get the extended warranty but the price ranged from $3k-$13k (MSRP) for 1-5 years of coverage. Would I expect more than 50% chance I’ll have to pay $3k-$13k for repairs over the next 1-5 years? I don’t think so based on the collective reports of failures of my make/model on the Internet. I may regrettably discover later that I was the one who should’ve bought the warranty but that’s the risk you take and I think the odds are on my side.

Get a quote on the warranty and determine for yourself what are the chances your engine fails and what is the cost of repair. Compare the two and go with the cheaper one.

They most likely make more money on that extended warranty than on the engine itself.

It is like that in all industries.

I got the platinum warranty (extra 2 years for a total of 5) for an additional $790.00. This was from jacos last year.

That was probably during the typical spring promotion like they are having right now. Currently they offer an additional 2 years of gold protection for free until March 31st, you can upgrade to platinum for about what you paid. Without the promo it’s not something I would buy but with my new 250 ProXS I’m spending the additional $700 to upgrade to platinum. It will only take one broken prop shaft or shift electronics issue to pay for itself.

Agreed, I’m in the camp that never buys extended warranty but at the price offered during the promo it’s a no brainer.
