Motor availability?
I've been reading S&F forums for several years prior to and joined in 2015, whenever I've needed info because there are so many knowledgeable people on here. This is my second post, the first was a couple of weeks ago looking for a motor in outboard motors..
Apparently the replies I received aren't promising, what I am looking for is to replace a 1500 tower of power with a short shaft for my Glastec true tunnel
that I'm restoring. I'm looking for a 150 Promax with a 15" mid and low water pickup to update my build.
Does anyone know for sure that combination even exist? If not I guess I will have to go ahead and rebuild the 1500 I got along with the boat I
purchased. That leads me to the second question, any rebuilders for the 1500? These pics are from the 80's and are what my new project is.
All input would be greatly appreciated.

you can buy a 15 clamp assy. and exhaust housing to start your project. They are selling for between 3 and 4 thousand. Then go with a 2.5L power head of choice and a sportmaster for gear case.

The link is dated 2015 so hopefully all the people looking at that time are not in the market anymore. There is hope, at least Mercury or Mariner
did make that combo so I'll keep looking! Any leads on rebuilders?

Isn't buying a real Merc 15" mid an expensive option compared to having one shortened?

This is all new to me! Didn't know you can shorten one. I would really like to find a factory stock setup 150 Promax with 15" mid and Cle or whatever factory
installed lower unit.

15" mid 150 promax's were a rarity but they did exist. The mid on my boat right now is from a 150 promax that my dad bought new in 97. They were giving them away because no one wanted to buy them. These days a factory 15" mid is ~3k. As far as the 150 promax is concerned, the block is identical to the 150 efi block, just comes with fiber reeds, higher rev limiter, and solid mounts. We have always ran a 2.4 tuner with the 150 promax, they are probably the strongest 150 ever built at ~180hp with a tuner and 34cc heads. Just blew one up a couple years ago and it ran 90 on a Ventura 2 pretty easily.

I hate to send someone to FB for info, but the Mercury inline 6 group is pretty fantastic.

If you feel like shipping the powerhead I am about to do one for myself and another for someone else. There are 15 inch PMs out there but you are going to pay for them.

Thanks for the heads up on Facebook group, I guess I'll have to join Facebook now something I have been avoiding!

A shorten one would be cheaper and lighter, normally I would never recommend a cut down but for the amount of stress in your application it should be fine.

Personally I would keep the 1500 short shaft. They hold good value

Yes, and for good reason. There's very few people that do it correctly, and doing it wrong/ cheaply will be plenty more expensive in the long run.
OP, a shorty 1fiddy promax is as rare as hens teeth, but they come around now and again. But I agree with the group that a rebuild on the tower would be pretty cool also. Remember this aboot FB, it's there for what you want it for. Plenty of great groups to talk aboot wrenching and racing. Good luck with your endeavor. If you go the shortened route, do a lot of research here. There's some really smart fellers that will guide you where you want to get.

Thanks for the advice John S. I'm here for the expert opinions you guys are smart. Since the bolt holes are different between the tower and the promax and I have a new transom the decision of which way to go has made it more difficult. At least my experience is with the 1500. I just wanted to update the build. I will still look for a promax.

Freshen up the inline; get a louvered wrap with the blue decals. They don’t look much better than that.
