Old cajun with mercury upgrade info
Okay I got a 1982 Cajun bass boat (its either a Brute 1 or 2 from what I can find, 17.5 ft long) with a 1978 Mercury 1150 on it and I need some help to figure some stuff out. I have had it for going on a year. Good compression, around 120 psi on all 6 from the last time I checked. Been using it every weekend to fish even in this cold weather lol.
1. Is there any way to make the motor push that heavy boat faster? Currently runs about 36ish with 1 or 2 people and gear on board. 3 blade 19 pitch aluminum prop at the moment.
2. Motor runs great for the most part, good whole shot but the idle isn't smooth as I would like (going from drive to neutral it will cut off every now and then). Timing is set to 21 degrees above TDC, new wires and plugs. New floats in carbs and everything is clean. Don't ask about rpm, still got to fix that lol.
3. Input on SG spark plugs(surface gap) vs regular style in these old motors.
4. Best oil mix ratio?
5. And for the trailer what would be the best winch stand and bow stop setup for this boat, tired of the Y blocks busting every few months lol.

Welcome to the site. Really need the rpm, as you know, to tell where you are at with the prop size. May be the idle is too low and why it occasionally dies. That motor probably has mixture screws which can help idle. On that size motor on that type boat I don't think you would notice a difference from SG to standard plugs. Stick with 50:1 on oil. Should change that bow stop to have v block above bow eye to stop boat in a collision so it don't climb into the back of your truck. Good luck and go fishin.

No sparkling wiggles in here, only dump truck grinches.

Take the huge windshield off, it should be good for a couple more MPH. Is your speed by the speedo or do you have GPS?
