2005 350Mag MPI 300hp inboard Tritoon only hitting 4300 rpm!

Hi guys, new member here. My name is Jim and I'm in Houghton Lake Mi. Hoping there are some really good mechanics on here that could shed some light on issues I'm having with my 300hp tritoon! I have had this thing in to 3 different marina's around here and all I can say is i'm out close to $3000 and the boat still is not running right. This boat normally runs right at 5000rpm wot at 50 to 52mph! now it only pulls 4200rpm at 39mph! The last place I had it at did the most work and improved it but they were dumbfounded at why it's not getting to 5000rpm! they supposedly sent engine running data into Mercruiser and they are saying there is nothing wrong with the motor! They then decided to switch outdrives on it and it still ran the same! I have the boat stored for winter but have been thinking about this problem all winter and spring is coming fast, just thought I would get a jumpstart on seeing what else I should consider doing when I get ready to launch her in a few months. If somebody needs more info just ask, the list is way to long to write whats been done already...Thanks for any input in advance.

Do u know if they did compression test and/or leak down? Guess they went thru fuel and fire?

Yes, they did both and everything supposedly looked good! it also has the cool fuel system on it and I know they had problems with those, but me and the last marina both went through the system and fuel pumps and pressure are all ok! I'm at a loss, this boat use to fly and with the thru hull exhaust sounded great at wot ripping across the lake. Now I don't even want to drive it as it can't even hit 40mph....:-(

Did they check for water in the toons?, or did this just happen one day or degrade over time? I have a place near Tawas and it seems most of my work these days revolves around driveability issues. I'd be happy to look at it for you come warmer weather.

Yes pontoons were supposedly checked for water! Found nothing they said. I have owned the boat for 6 years and first 2 years it ran 52mph at 5100rpm, had a slight miss in it at wot though! Then the 3rd year the gear on the bottom of distributor went bad, cam gear was still good! Put a aftermarket distributor in it and it ran but not great, now has factory dis back in it with new gear and still not running 5000rpm. I have run out of things to check because they have all been fixed..."supposedly"

The miss at 5100 was the rev limiter. Sent you a PM.

Make sure the advance was disconnected when distributer was timed. Happens every once in a while.

When engine data is good finding what’s wrong is tough. Since you have to find the bad sensor output.

I assume props good and hubs are checked to see if spun(provided its a hub that can spin)

Timing was reset by last marina when they put the original distributor back in. They said they triple checked it for accuracy as that's exactly what the boat runs like, timing being off! They said they pulled off the Bravo 1 out drive and inspected everything and it was all good, except the 19 pitch SS prop had one blade just slightly bent like it had hit something. Not enough to cause vibration or cavitation though!

Have the injectors been cleaned? Do all the plugs look the same? Just had one with the same issue and it was a bad plug.

More than likely it's the distributor sync and set up, I've seen it many times where guys screw with these things or put their own motor in and **** everything all up. He's been raked over the coals pretty good by numerous places and it's not a terribly difficult thing to correct.

All brand new injectors were installed and the plugs have been changed. New wires, oil change, iac filter, new iac, coil, and the list goes on and on....

Are you good with mechanical things? If so it might be worth it to go grab a timing light for yourself and try to double check it.

Can't really check it with timing light, it's a automatic adjusting system!!! Maybe I'll let Capt.insane-0 explain this...lol. All yours Lynn...
