Preping a chrome bore merc for new pistons and rings

How does everyone prepare there chrome bore 2.4's for new rings. I used to use a ball hone and lightly hit a few seconds to get rid of the glaze. The merc manual says don't do anything. Any opinions?

Nothing other than a good cleaning to remove any dirt, film etc. Its chrome!! The use of any type of Hone will screw up the chrome finish.

The only other thing I would check on an original 2.4 chrome bore block, is measuring every cylinder for being out of round. Very common. Usually happens if the motor was ever overheated or run hot. Sad but true. Great motors otherwise. Oh, and never chase a dropped or lost needle bearing with a magnet. It magnetizes the bearing & it then doesn't rotate & sometimes fails.
