If anyone wants a whaler - let me know. They're a dime a dozen up here in new england. In all different shapes. Beat up, and beautiful.

The worst thing that can happen is they soak up water. That swiss cheese transom has me nervous for you. Even on trailers, they can collect rain water. Your by-design 600lb hull may weigh 2,000lbs. You should be able to pick up the back end of that boat with 1 person. If not, you've got some issues.

But once done up, you can't loose your money on them!!!

here's one my Father just restored...

    Yrs ago I bought a 13’ in Fla that was a 1960’.
    Oldest one I’d seen.

It led a rough life and was left uncovered in the Fla sun.
First thing I did was make sure I could pick it up.
Passed that test and bought it.

I raised the 15” transom to 20” for the motors I could find.
The sides of the transom are foam core and motor board section was plywood.
All was bone dry and rock solid.

I did a thread on here about the project to show the nay sayers.

Thry are similar to Hydrostreams in that the outer skin is paper thin.
So drag it across a rock on the beach, bump the trailer, dick etc and you break the vapor barrier and start the yrs long process of core saturation and

I checked hull n transom before bringing home the 20.

BTW, did the lift test on a 13’ in Fla and one side was feather light (even w/a motor) and the other side weighed a ton.

Gary, very nice find, nice hull! Whalers are great boats!
I know keeping it old school is cool but put a new/er 4 stroke and it will be one extremely user friendly get you anywhere package.
My favorite most used of my boats!

I had a friend that would restore old whalers. He would stand the on the transom, cut a hole in the floor or bottom, put a pool fitting sealed to the bottom and connect it to a shop vacuum. Within the first hour he would have to drain the vacuum of all the water he pulled out of it. He always put a shop vacuum on his estimate because it would be burnt out by the time he was done. The hull would be a couple of hundred pound lighter.

that actually is the only way to do it, by drawing a vacuum on the boat. we always had a wall mounted, industrial vacuum system in our glass shop(s) with main lines running everywhere. (not a vacuum cleaner system, a vacuum pump system)...we used it for many things. but mostly for vacuum bagging down laminates & core materials, etc. the most fun you can have with a vacuum pump, doesn't matter how small the vacuum pump is, is to put the two bungs back into the top of a 55 gallon steel drum, that you want to get rid of, and drill & install one little port(nipple) in the top for a vacuum hose. turn the vacuum pump on and enjoy watching the drum collapse down to about 6'' in height. really neat to watch & a great way to get rid of those pesky unwanted drums. then just throw them in the dumpster.

Yeaha.. I never cared for the ride in the 13ft we had unless it was flat. And if you hit a larger boat wake they didn't fly very straight. But the kids loved it for tubing and escaping us from the slip and heading to the beach to hang with the crowd.

if it was a car, it could be called a "lead sled". that's a nice specimen though. I always liked the super basic models like that, with no chicken handles. 15'' transom/blue interior...its the only one I like. I very much would like to own a really basic blue 16...(not the 17)...

    In my early teens, a buddy had a 13’ w/a 40 OMC.

We ran all over Sandusky Bay, edge of Lake Erie.
One weekend some buds from home were visiting so headed to our favorite skiing spot.

The Bay was rolling it’s typical 3’ - 4’s so I whispered to my buddy driving, “they’ve never been in a boat like this, let’s scare them”.
We launched off one 4’ wave and the boat landed on its side, straight up and down!

It threw me out and one of the guys in the front!
I looked up to see my friend in front hanging from the railing on the high side, not touching the boat, my buddy Russ was still holding onto the steering wheel on low side, in the water, dragging beside the still running boat!

As the boat came down, it shoveled full of water to where it was pouring over the transom!

It threw EVERYTHING out of the boat! It looked like a debri field at a plane wreck.
The still running motor was dragging the 6 gallon metal gas tank by its fuel line, behind the boat!

We crawled back into the partially submerged Whaler and collected its contents from the water.

I asked Russ what we were going to do now and w/o missing a beat he said, “going skiing of course. What’d u think?”

He left the motor wide open and pulled the plug as we collected the crap from the debri field.
As the water drained from the boat, it slowly picked up speed from the 5 mph it was doing full of water until we were on plane and headed to our spot for skiing.

    Try that in another boat

    Awesome new project!

And don’t go on the EBW Facebook page and claim the speeds below. They will have a fit. Lol...

Love our 13. Would like to maybe do a 15 though too.
