CDI versus OEM electronics
just looking for experiences that some might of had with CDI versus stock, looking at power packs, stators and triggers.
my first question, as I have never used CDI products.
Whats the difference?
and your experiences.
Thanks Joe

There are some knowledgeble people here that will have hopefully talk about the tech of these pieces . Myself have used them twice - stator and trigger . Their tech site is excellent , instructions clear . Inexpensive compared to OEM . Your also asking about packs - i have read some threads on those and hopefully someone chimes in to talk about the differences. All I can state is great experience with the original Merc stuff and glad CDI is there as well . You will need a puller for the flywheel for stator and trigger - cheap though . You can have confidence in CDI

Thanks for the response! I was hoping that someone would respond with 114 views. Lol This is a topic that I've been inquiring about for some time. I know of some that are against using after market products and some that love them. So I'm just looking for input based off personal experiences since we have this option. Thanks

Many "OEM" electronic parts especially for older motors are reboxed CDI stuff.

Use OEM stuff when ever possible, Sierra is a good choice. CDI is not what it once was but a lot of older OMC stuff is only produced by CDI these days. Have had more issues with CDI stuff than Sierra at work so we will only use CDI if nothing else is available. JMO

CDI's tech knowledge is great, always helpful with a call. A couple years back he mentioned an issue with knockoff products being sold as genuine CDI and to always make sure you're getting the real article. Never an issue with CDI products.

What are you going looking to use?
I've used them on mostly Evinrude/OMC 88/92 and some mid 90s
I've used them on plenty of motors from just a power pack
To replacing everything w full digital ignitions kit, harness and rectifier..
Never had any problems with them.
I have the 8500rpm digital kit on both my motors.
Haven't had any problems and w the digital ignitions. Starting is easier even with a weak battery because the get the spark from battery and doesn't need to spin the motor to the minimum rpm to start it doesn't use the coil on the stator.. that's on the evinrude ignitions..
Idle really smooth.
Just make sure you get genuine CDI not knock off which there are a few of..
And shop around you can get it much cheaper it you look.
The 8500kit most places wanted $1200-1400 I found them for $600 and all their CDI stuff was cheaper and was shipped straight from CDI.

I've used a fair amount of both CDI and OEM in the past. If CDI is cheaper I would usually use it. They seem to be very nice products, and if you pick up the phone and call them their tech support is great. Now this experience was almost all on fishing boats motors, very little HiPerf stuff so that may make a difference.
Dave, I'm surprised about you preferring the Sierra over the CDI, I've always tried to stay clear from Sierra if CDI offered the same part.

I put cdi race switch boxes on my 2.5. They probably have 350+ dyno pulls at 10k and they still work fine.

Picture summer time backed up at shop take the time to correctly diagnose a power pack as cause of dead cyl. Install new CDI power pack now 2 dead holes. Now go back check everything again, its got a new power pack. After much time wasted come to find they have the colors to the coil primary wires backwards between 1 and 5. This after waiting over a week for the part.
