Anyone have a guesstimate as to how fast it will be properly set up with a 225 x? Maybe it's best to keep the boat closer to 80 miles an hour if it's going to get dangerous after that

Friend has the same boat and upgraded from the 250xs to 300xs.
    running about 800ft elevation.

"around 80 with 250xs. I know a 300xs will put close or into the 90 range."

Put the biggest, newest motor you can afford. Just because the boat can hit 85 or 90 with a given motor on it does not mean you have to drive at that speed every time out or ever. But when you want to or when you start to master driving chine walk you have the option. And the boat will be far easier to sell with the bigger motor.

Randy had told me a while ago the fastest prop he ran on the checkmate was a trophy, no one believed him so he threw a t shirt on it and told everyone it was a secret prop. He got everyone going.

Yeah, that was some funny stuff! The 28 Trophy right out of the box. I tried every prop you can think of. The Trophy would hit the 6400 limiter at 96 mph. I ran a 30 Promax and hit 98.4, but it took a long time to get there. Setback and engine hieght were the key to the speed. I built 4 21 Checkmates with that setup and all ran 96 with me driving. I did a few with 300X motors and they never went any faster than the 300XS's. The XS motors also got almost double the gas mileage. I have never had a 300X run faster than an XS on a Liberator either.

Great info guys thanks. Randy I was wondering how stable the boat felt at 90 + obviously you need smooth water to do that

How can you not like an honest, stand up supplier like Randy? Most specialty suppliers like Randy, trying to make an honest living would not share half the technical data that Randy does. My hat is off to you Randy.

All chine walkers are a handfull. The higher the motor, the easier to drive. After 90, the boat would lean alot to the driver side. Also, with the motor that high, you can chop the throttle at 95 and the boat will not hook. It would just slow down in a straight line. Dead stop to 96 mph only took about 2/3 mile.

Out of curiosity, do the Checkmate Pulsare 21s we’re talking about have a flat pad raised up from the bottom ? And do they have a transom notch ?

I’m asking because I have an older Starflite 21 and was wondering if the bottoms were similar and hence if this setup advice would apply to my boat too.

No notch and they have a flat pad about 6.5" wide. The boat has to do about 90 to get on the pad
