    Help Make My Boat Do 90

    I just picked up a 21 Checkmate closed Deck. I bought it without power. I'm looking for suggestions to get it to go at least 80 but would love too see 90... a 300X is out of my budget so thinking 225X, 250XS, or 300 Promax. I have 12 inches of setback but is a manual plate only...Thanks for your input

    More horsepower the better. I rigged a friend of mine with a 225 ProMax. Ran right at 70. I have seen where people have posted around 80 with 250xs. I know a 300xs will put close or into the 90 range.

    Thanks I'm trying to avoid a 300xs cuz I really like the alien cowl and I don't want to spend another grand on top of the price of the motor

    Not going to see 90 without a 300XS or a 300X with mods.

    Sorry but you have to have no budget to go fast and it is not cheep in anykind of motor sports

    Yeah those damn 300 X's really hold their value. I think I'll have to be open to a 300xs as well

    If your needing 90 and the talk is you need 300 - try and buy the best you can . They seem to hold their value . I dont believe you need to lowball the seller but a reasonable and fair value is best . As far as the cowl well your priority should be assessed . Looks like a nice hull - have fun .

    Checkmate Pulsares have a pad bottom and are reasonably efficient to get to go fast.
    Randy “Wildman” developed a very good recipe for this is, as Checkmates are not made anymore, sharing will not cost him business and this is not his tuning down to the detail he did anyway. More than a few have copied this or figured it out on their own, So

    1. 14-16” of set back, and a jackplate to get the propshaft centerline even with the bottom of the pad and up to 2” above the bottom.(Bob’s used to make Randy a custom 10” setback bracket with 5” of prejack and then adding a 4 or 5” power jackplate was all you needed to do the rest.)
    2. 300xs with a sport master leg. So you can surface the prop without loosing water pressure or having blow out at speeds over 85.
    3. 27 -28 Trophy plus.

    Like I noted, Randy rigged quite a few, so lots of guys have them this way and lots of others have since duplicated it. Since he is no longer able to sell them I think giving him credit for the recipe is only proper. He did play with other props and did even better with them( 98mph) than the Trophies, but I don’t think he shared the special prop info. I’m sure if you paid him to rig your boat you might get one on it. But a 28 Trophy plus will certainly get you over 90 if the rest is in place and you can drive the boat.

    BTW, the extra setback tames some of the chine-walk, but 80plus in a 21 Pulsare is no joke and driving practice is vital.

    I did 89 or so with a Pulsare 2100BR, 300 VMax, and a bit of playing. I had 12” of setback and my fastest prop was a Yamaha T1 29”. I never really learned how to drive it, though, and <!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention -->@altamate<!-- END TEMPLATE: dbtech_usertag_mention --> is right, they get difficult at around 70.

    I do remember Randy pulling upper 90’s on, IIRC, a box stock merc prop and he wouldn’t divulge what it was. I’m pretty sure it was a small hub prop and I theorized at the time that it was a chopper because, at least my boat responded well to all the bow lift you could get.

    AWESOME info guys this is my 5th Checkmate and I know a lot about Chine walking LOL. I think I want to go with a 300 Promax even if I get 80-85 I'll be happy with that... I'll run it this year with the 12 inch manual it has now if it handles well I'll add a hydraulic and squeeze a few more miles per hour out of it
