    60 hp 4 stroke questions

How are the new 60 hp 4 strokes different from the older 04 60 4 strokes? (If they are)
Were some generations more problem prone than others. Building a smaller boat and want a 60 4s for power.

Are you talking the older carbed 60 or are you comparing all EFI? (assuming your talking about Mercs)

Oop's ....Coffee hadn't kicked it yet...The merc 4 strokes with EFI. I know nothing about the little guys and want to learn. I hate to buy new and will be looking for a used unit. Want to avoid any potential problems that I may find in a certain generation.

I haven't seen any major issues with them. Random odd stuff, but nothing consistent. I've sold and worked on quite a few of these 40-60hp. Nice little motors. Electronics have changed thought the years a bit, coils etc. If it was me I would go with a cleaner unit VS a newer model year.

Been looking around in my area and found a couple that are fairly clean. 2k to 4k range But I live in the salt water and internal corrosion concerns me some. Not everybody flushes every time out. Thanks for the info..

If you are talking about MERC after 2005, Not much difference basically nothing changed, same as formula race also minus rev limiter and race features like solid mounts and wing plate mounts an short shaft. From all the research I have done they seem to be very reliable with only minor issues if any. I have seen upwards of 10K hours on a stock power head so that to me is pretty impressive, well over 1000 hours on power heads that are used for racing (formula race) in the Eu circuit and they run full throttle all the time. I do know however after 6500 rpm the valves walk, and near 7k they will blow apart if stuff is not reinforced. Simon offers tunes for them but only bumps about 5-8 hp. They already make closer to 70hp than 60 though. To put it in perspective, I spoke to Mark at tuff boats and compared to an etech 60 the tuff 16 was 5 mph faster with the the 4 stroke merc formula than the etec, only weak part in the prop shaft, they put a line cutter seal on the outside and if you surface the prop it will cut a groove in the shaft and snap it off, so replace the seal with non line cutter on if thats the plan. I got lucky and found the 60 formula race on here for 5k brand new in crate and thanks to Joe and paul the brought it from texas for me. Although i have been anxious to run it on my boat, its not done so i cant comment on its performance just yet unfortunately, soon, soon.... May we ask what kind of boat? Hopefully a performance mini!
