Sport master vs torque master
Can someone explain why and if a sport master is only better with speed above 80+ mph?
im currently running a v bottom boat with a 225 optimax and top speed is around 76-80 mph and I’m not sure if I should build a bobs nose cone or similar on my torque master or not.
my plan is to mount a transom low water pickup to be able to raise the engine higher an also experiment with another prop and maybe a bigger setback to gain more speed.

Tried a couple different torque masters on my Allison. EVERY time the prop would blow out a 90 mph!! Lot of transom lift. Not good for every application. my two cents

A coned torque master is faster than a sporty on alot of setups. Theres been a few people that say they rather have a coned tm rather than sm. I'm just goin by what a few have experimented with

The Mercury Racing site has a little explanation on the gear cases.

What boat? Just make sure one way valve is really sensitive.
Just about transom mounted vs..
My 380 Lazer was faster with the transom mounted pick up and no cone was over 100 that was 25-28 years ago...was just a plain lower unit nothing done to it except the plumbing for the water..
you have less drag with the transom mount and no cone..but if your going to surface the lower the amount of drag isn't as bad because nothings in the water really..
Had 2.4 efi Bridgeport and a modded 225 that spun the 32 chopper with ez..
My motors now (different boat/motors) are better with the low water pickups and I surface these too...in other words different boat/motors/setup makes a difference
That's why I asked what boatLast edited by mrichartz; 01-06-2020 at 08:38 PM.

Hi!
A sportmaster will slow you down if you run slower than 85 mph. The longer gearcase adds more drag if not surfaced. I mounted a Bobs on my Promax 300 and I did not gain speed. Top speed that time was 76 mph. The best gearcase for that set up was a Torquemaster with cambered skeg. Now I run a 400R and top speed is 89 mph. On this application the sportmaster is vital.

What runs the best is all bout boat and set up. Sm mite run better with that boat and set up. Tm coned run better with this boat and set up. just experiment or find other and that's already experimented.
