    Why Mercury???

As it states why Mercury? Doesn't seem like there's any other Outboards out there on this site like they don't exist! Could never picture a Skater with Yamahas on it like would be taboo...Please inform me!

Because no other engine will work above 90mph+ out of the box like a Mercury Racing outboard. A few have modified Evinrudes and Yamahas to go fast but they are not stock and run into problems with their warranty for modifications.

Gear cases and clamp assemblies are the biggest limiting factors to having other brands on your transom. You will find that most "fast" omcs, and yamahas have a sport master case bolted to them and there have been multiple clamp assembly failures in offshore abuse conditions.

This. Mercury racing is the only game in town for a factory high performance lower unit capable of high speeds out the box. They’re also the only 350-450 hp outboards that are even remotely suited to high performance applications.

Been an OMC guy my whole life, but OMC (OK, Bombardier) just does not have a lower unit that will work in a 90 mph or higher boat.
    Per Rock:

"Once I bought my first Hydrostream boating changed forever for me."

    Per my hero Instigator:

"I try not to let common sense interfere w/my boat buying decisions."

As my favorite Mercury dealer said and he sold them all: Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki, Evinrude
“They all SUCK ya gotta find out which one sucks the least...”
I have had them all and Mercury stays together the longest. Engine mounts, clamp, swivel brackets, and gear cases are the limiting factors.

Mercury owns the high performance market, and the large majority of all other markets. They have almost no market competition except for Yamaha. Yamaha is really only a competitor in the offshore and fishing markets. All other brands are fighting for last place.

While Mercury owns the high performance market they are not the top global producer, that honor goes to Yamaha followed by Suzuki and then Mercury. The data is hard to come by and much of it is skewed due to massive Asian sales of small motors.

I know around here it’s probably 10 to 1 Yamaha vs. Mercury. While most larger dealers service both, well over 90% of all the new boats sitting on dealer lots have Yamaha’s hanging off the back.

However, the new 4 strokes are creating a bit of a stir with local dealers. For the first time in years people are asking if Mercury is an option where for at least the last decade some dealers couldn’t give away boats with Mercury’s on the back, it was Yamaha or nothing. Mercury is still shooting themselves in the foot, their 3 - 12 month backorder on motors is killing them. I’ve heard more than once when asking about ordering a boat with a Mercury 4 stroke that they cannot guarantee delivery dates. Until that’s resolved they will continue to lose market share.

Why merc is #3? Because Asians and other non Americans will NOT buy our stuff while we foolishly buy theirs.
