I always wondered about a powerhead mounted over a tank and run load wheel on drive shaft so you get it at engine rpm.
Would require the smallest tank of any solution.
A bit of engineering to get a waterpump involved or use external hose plugged into mid?Last edited by powerabout; 12-08-2019 at 10:57 PM.

Go for it Gary. I would like to have one with a catwalk that goes out into it so I could walk out
back of and beside of what ever was running.

I had a couple tanks a while back. Large aluminum for jet skis and steel for boats. Found the aluminum tank a home but once the city found out they dumped a bunch of rules on him and he was not allowed to set it up in town. Needed to be locked up inside or drained when not in use. Both tanks eventually scrapped and cost more to scrap than it paid. The point of this post is unless you are outside city there may be ordinances that apply. Something to address before you invest.

Hi Gary,
I feel your pain and have been in exactly the same situation. One time I was WOT timing a V6 on the ramp with my test wheel and had my ear muffs on - could not hear ****. Then I feel the boat wiggling...seems weird....turn around.....there’s a guy jumping up and down on my trailer tongue to get my attention lol. He was none too pleased about me blocking the ramp.
Another time at the same ramp but different motor, I briefly put the timing light down in the splash well to grab some tools. Boat zoomed by on the river really close to the ramp, I was too slow, a wave came over the well, drowning a 6 month old timing light (many many bad words said...). Turns out Ferret has very sympathetic service techs, fixed me right up lol.
Anyway, got a couple options for you. About 15 years ago I saw a temporary test tank dug at Champ boat race. It was just dug into a field near the river/course and was for for a single boat. It was just lined with a tarp. I watched the crew use it with a test wheel, seemed to work fine.
At the OMC dealer I used to work for we had two steel test tanks on wheels that were designed to be rolled up to the boat. Setup took 20 min or so, and we would usually keep them full of water all the time. I’ll see if I still have some pics.
I’m looking at building a modular/collapsible tank but have the same noise concerns mentioned above - I live in the ‘burbs. I’m currently using a plastic stock tank just for idle speed dial in, it’s too small and wrong shape for running the motor any harder.

These are probably super expensive, but it seems like they are meant to back into. Sort of like the water-trough idea I guess. They say no test wheels needed though. Could be an idea.

EDIT: I just saw they have one made for dual motors too, interesting.Last edited by InjectorService; 12-09-2019 at 01:59 PM.
