Steel bore Merc 280 ??
Curious what are y'all thoughts on going steel bore on a 280? 280 performance with benefits of steel bore 225 Promax? Do stock 280 pistons work for this? Does the factory 1-piece exhaust plate still work well with SS motor? Any thoughts appreciated 😎

I have a couple champ blocks done in sleeves. One has some cut vertex. It went 40 hours or so when i pulled a couple pistons out to inspect. It was a pleasant surprise. I've turned it 8500 for 5-6 miles at a time but generally tried to keep it to 76-7800.
The other hasn't been run yet and has coated wiscos set up at .006.Last edited by Capt.Insane-o; 12-04-2019 at 11:00 PM.

If bores are setup properly , Should see no performance difference steel vs nik. Stock 280 pistons are fine however may want to swap to a titanium ring with the steel sleeves. Ive used weisco , vertex & wizard in all my steel bore high perf motors with great luck. 1 piece plate is fine for cooling

Ive owned several 280s & aware of which ring they come with. He can use a titanium ring on either the early side pinned or later top pinned factory 280 piston

There are some tricks to make a 2.5 liter high performance Mercury live with steel sleeves. One of them is to start from a fishing block. If you search for old posts by John Marles, you will dig up a lot of good information about how to set it up and how to control temperature.
However, Nikasil / Nicom on aluminum just works from the factory, and the investment in learning how to build a steel bore engine is probably not worth it unless you are going to build lots of them.Last edited by Markus; 12-05-2019 at 07:39 AM.

Here is my take on this.Have run several and own several of these motors .Gold rings on steel sleeves won't last long.i have had great luck on Johns Chrome moly rings on steel bores. No disrespect to my Friend Taylor.

Several years ago, Marles told me to use PRO Marine 481 rings, and he modifies them to fit top pin pistons. I made a fixture to modify mine.

X2 Nelson you are right as 1.5mm 481 rings were were replacement rings from Pro on Merc promax and XRI motors in 90's and sport Jet ' WITH STEEL SLEEVES" which at one point you could get over size piston for a sport jet with 1.5 mm rings and use them in outboard motas just my age surfacing again in most cases lake motas (NON Stem winders) under 7500 would live long time with side pinned pistons my .02

Trimming/modyfing the side pin ring to be used on a top pin scares the crap out of me. Such a tiny little tip.....
