    Mercury 245

So tonight i bought my first Mercury 2.5-245-carb powerhead that is a drop on. I am hoping to get some feedback on the Good-the Bad & the Ugly of this powerhead. Always Truly Appreciate the Help & Suggestions/Recommendations from members. Thank you

Never owned one. but they say every 100 ish hrs rering. There a guy round here (granted he dont use much at all) but he has one on a bullet that he bought new in late 80s maybe a 90. (Not sure ) he told me never been apart. So all in all guess it's how its used and been used. Good luck with her tho.

My first high performance outboard was a 91 2.5 245. Great engines but basically a 260 with carbs. So, re ring every 100 hrs etc. but good strong engines.

Check the bores and see if nic is good, do a leakdown test also, can save alot of money if rings are bad. just good insurance, they run great

I have a 91 245 carb motor and it’s a great motor ! Easy to work on ,simple to tune . I’ve owned it since 2008 and ran the piss out of it . Re ring every 80 hours . It’s on a fresh set never been started waiting for me to break in or sell . Pushed my allison grandsport to 96 mph @ 7200 rpm

Thank you for the feedback everyone. My next questions are--I am pulling the heads to look at the walls and de-carbon the pistons,is it safe to run 34cc heads on this and do 25 degrees of timing. Thank you

do your comp/leak down before ya pull tha heads.. will give ya base line ta compare anything ya do after tha fact plus will show some things tha eye won't with pistons still in it... 34's will work if pistons, rings and nic are all still good.. check for "steel" sleeve's..

if not degreed, go with 22/23*…

    jus my suggestions, gl...……….……..
