    148 Day Challenge - - - Chaparral 29 Signature restoration

Nobody wants to see it, do they? Afterall, this is a sport boat forum haha. This little project of mine is far from sporty. I'm starting a little youtube channel on fixing up my $4,000 turd surfer of a 1998 Chaparral Signature. Wife is tired of being beat up - so this will be the new family boat.

    Background story -
The boat was brought to a marine repair yard circa 2014/2015? It was hauled out of the water, and delivered to the marine repair yard for a loose outdrive / steering on the starboard side. Turns out the steering rod on the transom assembly's gimbal was corroded away due to galvanic corrosion, lack of zincs, or stray current in the marina. It needed to be replaced. The marine yard told the owners the price quote, and the owners had sticker shock. The boat can not go back in the water in it's condition, as the bellows need to be replaced too, and the boat may sink in it's current condition.
Fast forward a couple years of non-payment for storage etc etc, the boat yard takes them to court, and now owns the title. The boat yard owner was going to fix it himself, but then business boomed, and he pushed off the project.

Along came Wife and I looking at a 30' fountain in the yard that needed a repower... then Wife saw this gem. The inside looked great - just all the business ends needed replacing. Gauges, hot water heater element, mounting brackets for trim pumps, starboard transom assembly, and all the canvas.

So after $8,000 price quotes for new canvas, i go and buy my own sewing machine from SailRite.com
So after $3,500 price quotes to rebuild each engine, i go and buy 2 longblocks from Rapido Marine in hollywood florida for $3400 total, no core charge.
So after $2,000 price shock of a new transom assembly, i fly with a friend's small plane to NH and buy one off a freshwater lake boat for $300.
So after $150 per foot price quote of a slip around here, I got on a mooring for $40 a foot right next to my work!

So far, i've pulled both motors because if i'm pulling 1, why not pull both while i'm at it, and completely re-build it? I'm a glutton for punishment. Now i've got 2 newly rebuild longblocks, and I have 2 outdrives to rebuild (seal kits n such), 2 transom assemblies to refresh with bellows and gimbal bearings and all that, and I've got lots more to do on the actual boat. Replace the hot-water tank, repaint the bilge, Sew up a new canvas top, and several other small projects.

So here she is in all her glory:
    1998 29' Chaparall Signature 290 (31' overall with the bow pulpit/windlass)
    Twin 4.3L Mercruiser engines
Bravo 3 outdrives with Duo Props
    Trim tabs
    AC and Heat onboard.
Hot and cold water, transom shower, onboard shower, microwave, stove, fridge.
Sleeping room for 6 inside. Fwd V-berth, Aft Cabin, and wrap-around couch mid-ship with bed insert.

It's a bit different than what we normally see on this site, but i'll link some videos and such as I go along.
Earliest I can be on the mooring is May 1st.

I've got 148 days until May 1st!!! Think I can make it?

my brother in law offered to help pull the motors. In trade, several cruises and beer! Haha.

Used a chain fall for the close quarters, then guided him to yank me out. He won’t let me drive the big one, nor this here little one. Maybe if I let him drive the boat, he’ll let me? Haha

Looks good. Good luck with the rebuild, I think you'll make the May 1st deadline.

Bravo 3 drives with the inline duo props. So 2 outdrives and 4 props total

    how to polish a turd.
so the valve covers are painted! And I’m going to be painting the whole engine block red. All accessories will remain black. Why am I doing y’all this when you’re not even going to be able to see the engines under the deck anyway? Idk... resale value? Or that I just like to make it my own? Haha. Like restoring a bayliner and a force motor haha. But chaparrals are pretty nice, as are mercruisers. But I think I prefer eggbeater motors over inboards. These are a pain in the ass. Heavy too!!!

Make sure when you redo the bellows and gimble housings to replace the water feed hose from the transom plate to the bell, check for Bravo disease, especially if they have been used in salt water.
